I have nearly finished fully rebuilding and cleaning my Bianchi. After refitting the shifters, I am suffering problems shifting down on the right hand shifter (shimano dura ace 9 speed). When I move the inner lever to the left, the outer lever (brake lever) also moves slightly to the left which stops the down shift. If I hold the brake lever still, the down shift works perfectly.

Before taking the bike apart I was encountering slight problems shifting to the smallest sprockets but only very slight.

Any ideas as to why the outer lever (brake lever) is also moving and stopping the down shift?

Sometimes Shimano shifters can get a bit sticky like that if they've got dirt inside them. I cured a set by blasting the insides with WD40 a few times while shifting through the whole range of gears.

dont do that because youll take all the grease out of the ratchet, check your if there is any play in the levers because it sounds like theyre stuffed- had the same problem myself

Jon thanks, might try that.

Pete, wouldn't it be better to try it and get it working and worry about lubrication after, than to not try at all? As it is dura ace and only 5 years old and only ridden once a week, surely it can't be totally shot?

Jon, tried your tip and eventually got them working, although not 100%, they are working. Just need to make sure they are lubricated - oil or grease?

Why is Shimano (the Japp stuff) looked down upon by Campag users? Have I missed something?

I think it boils down to the fact that you can get spares for campag and shimano stuff has to be replaced.

also there is one mitigating factor.... campag is far superiour(sp)
