chertsey 4/3/07

Postby Stu Merckx Man » Sun Mar 04, 2007 2:32 pm

well i went through the usual routine before a race, get up too late, rushing around, getting stressed, but hey it gets the blood pumping!

arrived and chertsey to see paul (on the pearsons) and andrew green, and later joined by george.
before the race andrew said along the lines of 'i will just take it easy today, hang on to the back'...well that is laughable as andrew was up the front, coming through, taking turns at the front, chasing breaks, the works!!

anyways, so the event started by doing 2 laps, through and off warm up, then another 2 laps just going round.

ok so the race started, i was near the front and the pace was slow. one rider hopped off the front which soon got the pack moving. it was pretty steady until about 2 laps in, i suddenly found myself in a small break away with 2 london dynamo chaps. we had 20m on the peleton which was not moving too quickly, so i said 'we should do a through and off to try and get away, work together'... well i don't think that working together and addiscombe cc go in the same sentence when it comes to london dynamo.

i came through for my turn, we had increased the gap, and the 2 dynamo boys just sat there, so slowed right down and we were caught. anyway at some point after that 2 riders got away, but im not sure when. for the next few laps until the last lap i found it very easy to stay up front. at the front the pack was in 2 lines, the line on the right was constantly shifting forward and supplying the front with new riders. however still feeling a bit fatigued i wanted to avoid turns at the front. so what i was doing was going to the right and letting them take me up, then 3 riders from the front i would come across to the left and cut myself in, then slowly i would drift back to about 10th, then the process would repeat.
this was brilliant, it took nearly no energy and kept me well up there.

3 laps in and the spray was un believable and i could not see a thing through my glasses, so i pulled out and took them off...although it helped with my vision, the sudden shock of the wind made me drift towards the middle of the pack, so i had to really fight to get back in.

4 laps in and i was surprised at how slow the pace was so i went to the front up a hill and put in a dig, not to get away but to perhaps tire out some of the competition. up up ahead we saw the womens race, so i lead until we got to them, then took some shelter.

we then came through for the last lap, i was about 4 back, some women were going off the front!! but they soon got caught. around the back of the circuit and some men put in big pushes up the hill, i managed to keep up with them, i was now 3 from the front, with a strong dynamo rider in front of me...perfect! we came to the last straight which is still a looooong way from the finish.

as soon as we hit it however the sprint started at the front, so i went for it. i looked up ahead and my god did we have a long way to go !! 450m!!, i was already going full pelt! 200 m to go and i was dead, but thankfully so was everyone else, so i sat down for a few spins, then got a second wind of life, out the saddle i got and took some places, i was now about 4-5th with 100m or so left, lungs screaming, legs about to melt i nearly gave up. but obviously people were feeling the same as me. well i made it to the line in about 4th or 5th, so 6th or 7th over all because of the 2 that got away....hopefully i got the 6th so i can move up to third cat.

the sprint was a funny one, mr ian can fill you in on the technicals of it as he saw it from the side lines and was busy cheering us all on.
great ride, though very cold and wet. nice to see some addiscombe jerseys out there!

the pace was very manageable this time, legs were hardly ever burning, but the sprint is the longest and hardest i have ever done!
the actual race, not including the warm up laps was only 12 miles, and average 22.9, but it was very flat bar a few short sharp hills. anyone else wanting to start racing chertsey is the place to go- im sure paul and andrew can back that one up! :D

cheers,
stu

First off thanks to Ian, Jo, George, and Lisa for their support on a truly foul day. (Although Lisa was probably supporting Chris more than me  ). Oh and Stu's mum and dad.

Following Marek's subtle rebuke for trying to get my non-starter excuse in early (well can't blame a man for trying :D ), I decided to race whatever the weather. I didn't think it was going to rain that much though.

I didn't get quite the same warm up as Stu and Paul, as after we had ridden over to the circuit we were told that we couldn't leave our cars in the car park by the entrance. This left a chap from our Dynamo hosts and myself to ride back, load in bikes, and then drive the short distance back to the circuit in cleated cycling shoes. It's not actually as difficult as it sounds.

Right, the race. I did the first lap towards the back of the field just finding my feet and keeping an eye on others, watching their lines, their riding style etc. Was amazed to discover just how few riders weren't pedaling round (fairly shallow) bends, or more importantly downhill! There are two small hills/lumps on this circuit with a dip between them, so pedaling down keeps your momentum to take you half way up the second without trying. Due to this by the end of the first lap I had moved up to the front ten placings without too much effort.

I wouldn't describe the pace as slow (but that probably says more about the difference in Stu's and my ability :D ), but it wasn't too fast. Being somewhat shorter than a lot of others meant that I could save quite a bit of energy by hiding behind larger riders, but whenever my momentum took me towards the front I did my bit to avoid annoying too many people for wheel-sucking the whole race.

At the start of the final lap, as we were passing the ladies, I got stuck behind a few who hadn't realised that the leaders had opened about a 100m gap. Using my size to my advantage again I called out and squeezed through a gap and jumped across. This tired me a bit so when Chris (Scarlett) went for a long one, which in turn opened up the sprint very early I let out a weary grunt.

Coming out of the final right-left flick I was on what seemed a reasonable wheel. I saw Stu to my right in what was the main bunch line, and realised the line I was in was basically me and the bloke I was behind :? .

The long straight is a bit of a killer with a sprint that long, and the chap in front of me died and pulled over with about 400 metres still to go. I like to think I've got a fair sprint, but not over that distance. I had no choice but to try and go as I was in the wind with no wheel anyway. I was about level with the 8th-10th placed riders in the main line, but as they came off each others wheels, and I began to die, I started to lose some places. With about 100 metres left and realising all the points were gone I just sat up and rolled in as I couldn't see the point in sprinting for 15th and just finished with the main pack - no idea where.

I'm happy with that as my aim for my first race was not to get dropped. If I'd got in the right sprint line at the finish I might have got a better result and maybe even a point or two, but hey that's racing. So much easier with if's!

Stayed on to watch George put in a fine performance in a 20 lap handicap in the E/1/2/3.
the actual race, not including the warm up laps was only 12 miles, and average 22.9

I had 22.4 av, but the distance was nearer 16 miles. 8 laps of a 2 mile circuit (you didn't skip a lap did you :D ). May be water in the computer as my old one suffered the same problem.)

Didn't look for results, don't know that they'd do them on the day.

They should appear here in a day or two, and will also go up on the londoncyclesport website (with some photos).

Well done to all of you for going out there and racing in such rubbish weather.

Stu - hopefully you have enough points and will be able to do Alford next week.

Andrew - you will have to start coming out with the training group.

Excellent stuff guys, I was tempted to warn you about the straight but thought that you would be alright. Andrew I see you took my tips on pedalling down the hill, so much easier to do that than pedal up the other side I always find.

You can leave the sprint quite late at Chertsey but it is one of those ones that is quite difficult to judge as it is such a long one and you kind of think it is going to be easier than it really is.

Well lets hope you are up there in the results Stu, sounds like you rode a good attacking race and did some smart moves staying off the front.

How did George get on in the E123 race?

Cheers

George did well. He was very involved in his group and looked strong throughout. The elites and firsts went through some of the thirds and the seconds, but some latched on to form quite a sizeable peleton.

George's (the front / 3rds) group was still clear up until about 6 or 7 laps to go when the elites put in a big dig on the straight and descimated the peleton. They caught the front group but George stayed in there right to the finish. Looked a bit too knackered to sprint but still came in with the front group, which I think contained a lot of elites and 1st cats. At least half the field was left scattered all over the circuit. Top result.

Thanks for the tips Marek, when I went round the course I saw exactly what you'd meant.

Paul I'll give it a go soon, but not after an alchofrolic Friday night :D

Alfold is my first race. It is halfway between Guildford and Horsham. It is not ALFORD it is Alfold. It is a similar circuit to the 4 up time trial if any of you did that.

The circuit is rolling, road surface is a bit crap in a number of places. Finish is on a longish straight but is a drag. Break normally go on this one and quite often stick.

Cheers

Well the weather was foul today; it just started raining when the 4ths set off. I arrived very early and met up with Andrew, Paul, Stu and Chris. It was good to have some Agreeable support with Ian Jo and Lisa there to cheer us all on as we flew past.

Got a few sneaky warm up laps in with the 4ths as they were warming up to learn the track which I’d never ridden before, Keith Butler said it was alright I just had to show the 4ths how to ride thru n off.

Stu was riding well up the front all race in the top 4 or 5, then towards the last 2 laps Andrew came up and was also giving it large at the front of the bunch, well done lads on a good race.

I mostly hid in the clubhouse before our race cos it was peeing it down and a bit cold, so sorry for not cheering you guy’s on as much as I would have liked.

To the line ready for the off, Keith told us we were going straight into the race with no warm up laps, oops. Oh well, jacket off thrown to the ground breath in breath out and the 3rds were off.

Straight away the pace was fast our 3rd group contained about 25 riders, and then suddenly 2 riders went off the front. I thought I’d better go with them, so off I went in chase mode.

Got to them and 10 or so riders had followed my wheel we were now a breakaway and would stay that way till the end.

First 5 laps we were going pretty well together fast but not too much cooperation up front from ¾ of the riders. It was only me and 2 or 3 others really pulling on the front.

One strong rider Fit For no.18 was really verbal and annoying but I just ignored him, he reminded me of a bossy Teacher trying to organise the kids.

The fast sweeping switchback descent onto the long finishing straight was great fun I found that hugging the inside apexes and not using the brakes I could get some distance from the group, only problem though I ended up alone going into the straight.

I quite enjoyed staying up the front doing more than my share of turns after all it’s early in the season and should help to strengthen the legs, even if it would be detrimental to my sprinting.

7 laps to go I think and a breakaway group of about 12 Elite/1st’s caught us up along the straight, they were absolutely hammering it along I had to dig a little for a while to stay with them, I think we dropped a few other 3rds at that time.

Once I’d recovered I got up towards the front but couldn’t quite stay on the front as much as before as the pace was a bit higher.

Still I found it fairly easy to stay with them and wasn’t really getting out of breath and my heart rate was very comfortable, I just felt it hard in the legs mostly.

2 laps to go the paced upped, it was a bit chaotic up the climb, I realised you just had to stand your ground and no one would bother you! 2 riders had gone clear, The Teacher no.18 and Chris from Norwood Paragon.

Last lap got up to the front right on the sweeping descent flew down the sweeping descent to find myself clear, I could see the other 2 guy’s 200M up the road then me 20M¬¬¬ ahead on my own oops!!, Oh Well 600M to go I just went for it, I could smell the aroma of the podium and it went to my crazy head.

After what seemed like ages sprinting I knew I couldn’t keep it up and the sprinters came through. I still managed to finish in the group and was happy that I was in the mix during the race.

The back of my legs at the top were killing me after the race, although I wasn’t at all out of breath, just found it painful to sit down.

First race of many and I’m looking forward to the next one.

Cheers George

Well done George, all that training you have been doing is going to pay off in the racing this year. You will be well up the leagues by the end of the year, but more importantly it sounds like you were having fun.

Cheers
