Freewheel Help Required

Postby Graham O » Tue Mar 13, 2007 11:15 am

All,

My freewheel seems to have forgotten what its for. On the ride into work this morning, it decided to lock up on some occasions, and on others freewheel in both directions.

The wheel needs to go back to the shop, but I need to sort a quick fix before attempting to ride home. Has anyone got any tips.

One that I know is to pour boiling water over it. I saw this done once in the old days....

Anyone got any others that I could try....

Ta,

Graham.

Thanks marco,

Just tried the water and no luck. The freewheel is locked, so hopefully I will be able to nurse it home.

Its my daughters parents evening at home, so the stakes are high. If I don't get home on time, I'll be spending the night in the dog house...Funny how these things happen at the worst times......

And to think you were cussing my squeaky fixed wheel and manic spinning!!!!

If it all goes really bad there is a little shop the other side of Waterloo bridge that in the past has done me on the spot repairs and they may have freewheels…

Good Luck!

Well thanks for the advice chaps. Though I would give an update.

I got home in one piece last night, but unfortunately my bike didn;t.

The freewheel was actually locked up completed, so decide to ride it home steadily. Anyhow, I was getting more confident and going a little too fast when my instincts decided it would be a good time to stop pedalling.

Anyhow - crash, bang, wallop = rear mech in 3 peices and bent rear hanger..train home and now I'm commuting on my mountain bike.
