Fast local 10 courses?

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Fast local 10 courses?

Postby Andrew G » Thu Jan 25, 2007 10:44 pm

Can anyone recommend any fast(ish) 10 courses fairly close by (probably G or Q). Fancy trying a few other than just slogging up and down the Holmwood this year.

Last night Paul Tunnel was happy to see a tandem one on the Q10/19 which apparently has a ski-slope start, any others with good "drop-ins"?

Cheers,

Andrew.

The fastest G course is G10/57. No gift start I'm afraid and a slog up the railway climb (the central section of the G25/53 course) but you should be doing 30 to 40 most of the way down it on the way back.

Q10/19 is the fastest Q course and reasonably convenient.

Slightly further afield the H course near Farnham is fairly quick but can't think of it's course code (someone like Terry will know it) and the P613/10 is quicker on a good day.

Going north the F1/10 can be quite quick but the events are early morning. The E2/10 is very quick for its afternoon events but subject to roadworks for most of this year and the evening events on the F20/10 are usually some of the fastest 10s of the year (if you don't mind mixing it with nose to tail motorway traffic).

Bear in mind that the quickest 10s can be popular and have full fields so it's usually worth ticking the reserve box if you are keen to get a ride.

G10/98 is supposed to be quite quick too, but I've never ridden it.

The Farnham/Bentley course is H10/8.

There are a couple on the A3 near Liss that are fairly quick; P881 & P883.

Thanks chaps I'll thumb through the book for the G10/57 and 98.
I think the others might be a bit far for early starts. I'm not going to set the world alight, just want to see what I can do and experience something other than Holmwoods drags.

Andy

Most events held on the Bentley bypass (h10/8) are on Sat afternoon.

Also 25s ((H25/8) and the odd 30 which are based around the same course.

These events are usually very well run. I think the first race is the first Sat in May (Farnham).

Come and give it a try-I allow about an hour from Sutton, it`s just S-W of Guildford.

Once again good luck on Sat.

I'm going to try out the P883 (on the A3 at Petersfield for the benefit of Mr Munnery :wink: ) on Easter Sunday.

TT route codes

Postby Paul on the Pearson » Fri Mar 23, 2007 5:28 pm

Must admit I havent as yet really looked a the TT handbook properly, three quaters of which appear to be the rules, which I will of course familiarise myself with prior to entering my first event so as not to unwittingly commit some henious misdemenour and have the full brunt of the RTTC come down on me like the preverbial ton of bricks. Do you really need that many rules to ride up and down a dual carrige way a few times as quick as you can? But I digress, the point of this post is to ask how you translate the codes for the course's, is there a glossary somewhere and if so why the codes in the first place?

Paul, there aren't many of the rules you need to know about. Lots of them are to do with how the organisation is set up & run, how events are promoted etc.

As a rider the things you need to know are:
How to fill in the entry form and enter the event.
Pin your number in so it can be seen.
Turn up at the start line on time.
Look where you're going.
Don't draft people if they catch you.

TT courses were originally given codes way back in the days when racing on the public highway was of dubious legality so it all had to be hush hush. Saying "the race will be on the A1 at Boroughbridge" would rather give the game away to PC Plod, but saying "the race will be on course V252" kept it secret.

A brief description of each course is in the handbook, after the listing of all the events. They're divided up into regions which were each given a letter when the were listed alphabetically. So in our neck of the woods:
E = London East
F = London North
G = London South
H = London West
P = South
Q = Southeast

Unless you suddenly decide to change radically from what you normally ride / ride in you won't upset anyone. Some of the more venerable people I saw last year who were starting riders might complain about the length of your hair and earings though :D

As an addition to what Jon said, and as a start point the course you did the President's 10 on is the G10/42.

To keep the races even more secret the riders used to race in all black as well for added stealth.

Itchy wool

Postby Paul on the Pearson » Sun Mar 25, 2007 6:43 pm

Thanks for that. Having read a fair amount of cycling books its an interesting part of British cycling history when the powers that be decided to put a stop to that silly massed start carry on as they felt it upset the ever more prevalent automobile driver and scared old ladies. Apparently the only fabric allowed for the all black racing kit was really itchy wool, the itchier the better!
Am hoping to do a few of the evening 10's in May.

Andrew - SCCU 10 is on G57 on 19 May. Rawson Shield points up for grabs, and it should be easier than last weekend.

Paul - in amongst all the rules in the Handbook I found a list of 'substances' which will make you go faster. What? Oh!

Jon - I shall be in that neck of the woods at Easter, so might give P883 a go myself.
