The Shimano cable discs aren't *quite* as powerful as the Avid BB7s I use, but at £25 per end they are excellent value. I'd use them quite happily.

The QR skewers with the best (or least bad) reputation are the standard Shimano ones, closely followed by Salsa if you want pimpy. Whatever you use, it's worth checking them for tightness at each regroup/top of hill.

Marco, you need to check whether you have post mounts or IS mounts on the frame and fork. Most will be IS and most brakes will fit both, but note one of those Deore models will only fit posts.

I had the Deore cable disc brakes and I found them problematic.

1. The mechanism didn't have a lot of torque (short arm) so they lacked braking power; I believe this was fixed in later models

2. The brake pads they came with were the organic type, which wore extremely fast in UK conditions, needed replacing almost immediately

3. When the pads wore down the arm would run out of travel and hit the cable stop before the pads could contact the disc - which meant absolutely zero braking.

I binned them and replaced them with Avid cable discs. Which I know Grahame will recommend very highly.

I believe I have a set of Avids for sale, having gone to hydraulics, but will need to check I have all the bits.

If its any use to somebody... a company called bicycle rubber (honest guv) on e-bay will post 10 tubes to your door for £20 post and packing free. Bargain.

errrrmmm. Confession time. I was swapping tyres on my old mtb earlier today and I popped the inner tube with my crappy tyre lever. I then found out I ain't got no tubes tee replace the holey one. I'm off to the club house to learn how to do this fixer upper stuff properly but I reckon I could be in for a few tubes marco, 20 is quite a lot for a man of such few miles - but I'd happily be up for say 10. Let's see how popular this gets and if you need me tee make up the numbers then whoop de doo.

Yeh, it happened to once on one an ACC sunday ride. The first I knew of it was the sound of the disc rubbing on the pads as the wheel moved about. Luckily my wheel didn't come off. I was on level but bumpy ground and it took me quite a few seconds to work out that my QR had become completely undone. The scariest thing was that I'd just done a pretty fast downhill.

Rim brakes do at least tend to hold your wheel in the event of QR failure.

I'm in Marco - they cost me £4.50 a pop (no pun intended) so this sounds like a bargain. Once we hit da magic number - how do I get the funds to ye - be warned tho - me carrier pigeon is on stroike loike
