Points...

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Points...

If one becomes a 2nd category rider mid season, does one then have to gain a further 25 points in the same season?

Or do you get 'let off' for the remainder of the season, and get to start the following season as a 2nd cat. And then have to gain 25 points in that season to maintain 2nd cat status?

Getting a head of myself a little, but i just wondered!

Going up you stay where you get to. It's only if you don't get promoted during the season you have to worry about avoiding relegation.

So for example...

I get promoted to 2nd cat in July (hopefully)...

I finish the season without gaining a point as a 2nd cat...

But go into 2008 as a 2nd cat anyway...

Then in 2008 i have to gain 25 points to stay a 2nd cat, is this right?

100% accurate Adam.

But why wait until July??

Also, if you have excess points when you move up to 2nd, they count as 2nd cat points.

Example: 3rd cat gains 35 points, then a win = +10 points = 45. Subtract 40 points, 2nd cat with 5 points.

Yeah i know paul, but i dont want to get carried away!

Even if i get promoted in May, 1st cat is an awful long way off. I mean 200 points in a season!? is that even possible!?

Ahem.

Not impossible, a certain Brett Perez went from 4th to 1st in one season :!: and I think Gethin Butler went straight to Elite :!: There are a lot more points on offer in E123 races 100 points for winning a National A road race, 85, 75, 66, 58, 51, 45, 39, 34, 29, 25, 21, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2

Hardly a reallistic goal though, they were both experienced riders in all but category.

Go for 2nd and get experience riding with them - the racing takes on a whole different persona, then next year......

Yep definitely! A few really strong 2nd Cats :James Cocker (Economic Energy) and Dominic Gabellini (Rapha Condor) were just a few points shot of 200 and decided to to get anymore points and remain as 2nd cats when they could have easily made 1st.

In Domiic's case he told me he wanted to win races and not race against first cats. At 2nd cat level there is a range of ability from those who just get their 25 points to maintain their status and those who could be Elites if they really applied themselves. I think its right that they make it really hard to be a 1st cat because it should prove that you're a very very strong rider...Oh and last year former Motocross rider Tim Elverson (VC Meudon) went from 4th cat to Elite status.

I have to say staying a 2nd cat just so you can win a couple of races is such a easy way out in my opinion. If im winning races i want it to be because i am the best, not just because i purposely stop gaining pints to have to ride against better riders!

Im gonna go full bore for 2nd cat this year, get up as soon as poss. Then spend the rest of the year learning the ropes and seeing what my body can do. (I genuinely suprised myself with how well i rode over three days last weekend, so maybe theres more in me still...)

Then next year, full on charge for 1st cat! Oooh, thats enough excitement for one day i think... I still have three seasons after this one as an under-23 so maybe im not too late in this game...

Unlike me

Generally long established riders are those that came up slowly and steadily improved with results coming through hard work. take it one step at a time.

I deiberately stopped (road) racing in June 2 years ago on 39 points so that I didn't go up, as 2nd cat offers someone of my age and ability nothing but a pasting every time I ride. I could manage to hold up with most 2nd cats, but races were nearly always E123 and the E's and 1's disappeared up the road leaving the 2nds to pick up the pieces - it was soul destroying getting dropped week after week  , whereas in your case, you have the capability to be competitive and move up the rungs. Get the experience - it counts for an awful lot, and go for it 8)

If your aiming for 1st cat status and to be successful get a ramp test done to see if you have the potential and maybe consider a coach too.

And he takes after his name some what i might add.

Rob, tell me more...

I know what a ramp test is but elaborate on where and how i go about getting one done etc. and tell me about yourself and what you have achieved. I love listening to peoples cycling stories, ive never met anyone who rides a bike who hasnt had some gem of knowledge that has helped me out!

Cheers,
