Its a wonder anybody actually finished...!?

But should it be removed from the race, i dont think so. It wasn't anywhere near that bad in previous years, and it was dry today. Which i think lulled the riders into a false sense of security...

True that Sean, im not sure but i can't imagine the racing scene is that hot in sweeden. And thats the only place they'll be allowed to race sooner or later i reckon. Its a real shame though, the've got some quality riders, cooke, hunt, casper (well up until last sunday anyway!)

Yeah, its interesting that a lot of teams have opted to stick with there carbon deep section jobbies through the classics so far...

I wonder if CSC can win Paris-Roubaix on sunday with there Zipps!? :wink:

I wouldn't have thought so, not on cobbles. Flanders and Roubaix you want a good old fashioned set of 36 hole hubs and box section rims, gotta be strong :) . I was amazed to see a few in Gent-W use deep rims. General concensious is carbon rims are too rigid and give too much shock over the cobbles, not bike friendly either. Trek/Disco denied it but Hincapie was the only one to use them in Roubaix last year and look what happened to his bike.

Why are the older generation of this club so bloody traditional?

Where does this idea that carbon rims are too stiff for rough roads? Maybe some are, depending on how they are built (i.e carbones, aeolus' etc that are standard rims with a fairing on top). But Some, like Zipps have there spokes built into the rim at inner edge. Thus giving them a large area to absorb shock and dampen vibration.

I can vouch for this so far, and if you watch cervelo's testing on cervelo.tv the CSC boys can too. So dont be so suprised id you see the odd 303 or 404 on sunday... and be even less suprised when they win (well, maybe...)

Hincapies disaster last year was his steerer tube, damaged in an earlier crash. The same thing happened to a rider at Flanders last sunday. Without deep section wheels i think! And Bonty Aeolus' aint got nowt on Zipp!

It's not tradition Adam it's the punishment the wheels have to take over these cobbles (which are very big and have fair sized gaps in them). The wheels need a bit ot flex and a lot of strength to absorb the bashing they take. Nearly every rider will use "old fashioned" box section rims, it's not just carbon rims but all the nice medium profile Fulcrums etc that will be swopped for handbuilt wheels as well.

Generally the deeper the rim the stiffer the ride, this makes it faster but less complient. Honestly I'd be very surprised if you see many carbon rims.

Cancellara won Paris-Roubaix last year riding for CSC, and used traditional alloy-rim spoked wheels.

Crikey, I won't be allowed to post soon as over the hill, I'm getting my carbon zimmer frame next week :shock: Campag of course (duck).

I can see the logic of carbon rims if they are tubs, as similar to my frame there is a fair degree of lateral compliance whilst still being horizontally very stiff, but would think thatthose with the aluminium rims on for clinchers would not be used.
