Addiscombe Win!!

Postby George » Sat Apr 14, 2007 4:08 pm

A sucessful days racing at Chertsey for ACC.

In the 4th cats we had about 9 riders, the Yellow presence was amazing, everywhere you looked there were Agreeables.

In the 4ths we had a couple of casualties ie punctures, just when the peloton passed me I cheered "come on Addiscome" then I heard a loud BANG :!: Oh no it was a man in Yellow with a blow out.

One of Jons friends in his first race got pushed off the track on a corner and wiped out, he had a bloody knee and hand but soon repaired the bars and got straight back into the action.

In the 4ths we had Paul H, Jon(man in green) and myself, also Marek was there and Simon(hulk legs)

We all had a plan to do a crazy Kamikaze attact from the gun, thats exatctly what we did we shot off and I think one or two other were present for the ride with us three.

Jon accelerated so hard he almost dropped his team mates, but unfortunatly we were caught after a lap.

It was a hot windless day, the track was fairly flatish with no real hills to aid a breakaway so it didn't bode well for our constant attacks.

Paul Jon and me were constantly gunning off the front to breakaway but is was appearing like a futile business today as one big Fit For guy kept strongly chasing down every break almost single handedly.

6 laps to go I decided to sit in a little to get some power into my sprinting legs, but Jon kept pushing hard off the front, at one stage he was in a 2 man break and dropped the other guy and even continued alone for a whole lap

2 laps to go Paul said we should stick with the Strong looking Fit For rider to tow us in for a lead out man

Last lap the pace upped and the Peloton strung out, I positioned myslf behind this guy in abou 4th or 5th position.

2 Dynamo's came through looking good I ditched Fit For just as he blew  snuck in behind them and got low into a tuck.

Sweeping fast downhill round the last corner I was 4th man Jon was there too, we were in a perfect sprinting position :P

The speed was really cranking up I was in top gear really going still had enough strength for a good sprint, I got a little boxed but not too bad touched a couple of bars beside me then gunned.

Jon was just ahead dicing with a Dynamo and I was in the mix, didn't quite get the lead out man right as he almost lead ,me down a dead end :?

As I crossed the line Hulk Legs was just beside me and I didn't even notice Jon had gone and done it, probably because he wasn't in his Addiscombe top:wink:

Jon won the sprint, it was close he wasn't sure if he was 1st or 2nd but our Elmers End Chain Gang 4th cat Dulwich Mates confirmed Jon had got it :D

I was happy to be up there in my first real sprint, I was about 7th or so but didn't really notice as my head was down and I wasn't looking up.

Paul was a bit frustrated that the breaks weren't happening today and there were no hills, but he rode actively during the race, even so we had a Team result!

Awesome result, but it doesn't suprise me at all. That Jon is an animal on the bike.

Sounds like the same guy who rode on the front all day at Cutmill a few weeks ago. He simply dragged everyone around on his own for the whole race and chased down every attack.

Great stuff, congratulations Jon, you must get an Addiscombe top this week. :D A shame I couldn't hang around for this race but my Dad had to leave and he was driving. When we left George was charging off the front with a couple of others and Paul was bridging the gap :) .

Back in the 4ths I had great fun tinged with a little disapointment. I'm very grateful to my Dad who drove me down as I'd discovered my car had a flat tyre last night.

Big field of about 75 with the yellow perils - including a number of debuts - making up a fair number :D (also good to chat to Stevo Kemsley (TSN) who is ex-Addiscombe but switched when he started to concentrate on triathlons). We set off at a reasonable, but not hectic, pace. Riding shoulder to shoulder in a big field at a decent pace was putting a big smile on my face.

It took a little bit of getting used to the size of the field as staying too near the middle of the pack you gradually slipped back through the bunch. On a couple of occaisions early on I noticed coming out of the final flick, when the field strung out a bit, that I was a bit too far back and had to put in more effort to shorten the elastic.

I was feeling pretty good though so on the wide home straight could comfortably cruise up the outside and slot back in around the top 10-12. By lap 4 I didn't need to waste this effort as I was staying towards the side if the peleton and could hold a top 20 place quite easily.

A couple of times I spotted an Addiscombe jersey trying to get a gap, but nothing was going to happen today with a field that big to hunt you down, so I concentrated on keeping a good position and saving as much energy as possible.

On lap 7 or 8 (mid point) when one failed breakaway attempt (by a non-ACC rider) was pulled back the pace eased sharply and I had a brief touch of wheels but held it upright so no harm done. I think it was about now that one guy hit a small hole or something and just seemed to fall sideways. A bit of a wierd one as he was riding up the side of the group so should've seen what was ahead of him. The pace picked up again immediately and didn't drop with a brake grab like that again, thankfully.

In to lap 13, and only 2 to go, and I was making sure I didn't drop out the top 12 places and fighting to hold the wheel I wanted so I didn't have to waste energy making up any lost ground. Half way round this lap I hit a crack in the tarmac and my tyre went pssst and flat straight away. :( Raised an arm and called out to others and just rolled to a stop, my great mood sunk like my tyre.

Walking back to the start/finish I became more philosophical. Looking at my computer I had 26 miles at a gnat's under 25mph average. My only previous race (in the cold and pouring rain) was much shorter and slower, yet I had felt comfortable all the time in this one and was looking forward to mixing it up in the sprint. In fact having punctured I can now claim a win was guaranteed and I was robbed  :D .

Got back to S/F to chat to the others and it seems nearly everyone finished in the main pack, and had had a good day. Until his puncture Apples (also in only his 2nd race) was looking good, and Carl (in his 1st race) was also looking strong so keep an eye on those two.

I'll be back at Chertsey on the 5th May and hope to have some of today's competitors back there with me. Two races at Palace before that though  , but after today I'm not dreading them as much. I know I'll still get dropped but I have a bit more confidence that it won't be on lap 1 now.

Cheers,

Andrew.

well done for getting so well stuck in and for such a good write up - shame about the flat. Still, you're doing it mate, more than I could even dream about, chapeau indeed!

Well done to Jon who was the strongest as usual and deserved to win.

That thick-for guy was a pain in the arse - he got in at least 2 breaks I was in and wouldnt do anything on the front. His tactics seemed to be to ruin the race rather than try and win it. Everyone to themselves I suppose.

Fantastic guys, well done jon! its well deserved!

Shame about the various punctures. The 'others' and i had a decent race at hillingdon, but my dinners ready, so be patient for the write up!

Did the Fit-For guy have zipps by any chance? Not that thats got anything to do with it, but im trying to differentiate between the one that matt speaks of and the one i know of...

The guy with Zipps is somebody else who also likes to sit on the font of the bunch.

Well done last week by the way.

The saturday was the 25% hill, you'd have loved it!

Ventoux sounds good, wasn't it a bit chilly up top?

Well - Finally did a proper race.

Had a really good time, and felt surprisingly comfortable for most of the time. I spent most of my time getting used to riding fast in the bunch.

Anyhow, I went for glory at the end, but unfortuately mistimed my effort. Its a longer finishing straight than you think. I think I was leading the line with 200m to go, but unfortunately I ran out of puff and had to sit up..bugger !!

Couple of lessons to learn though..

1) I could have gone harder in the race, and should have been involved more up at the front from a little earlier in the race.

2) Need to sit on the wheel for longer in the finishing straight.

Anyhow - I'm full of confidence now and can't wait for the next go !!

Well done to all who raced today. Particulary George who looked to be inflicting some serious pain on the other riders in his race.

As jon won- he can claim his race fee back from the club- that will go towards an addiscombe jersey!

Well done to all riders today, good reports too.
