Hillingdon - 14/4/07... Marked Man

Postby -Adam- » Sat Apr 14, 2007 8:13 pm

Well what a fantastically sunny and warm day, global warming huh!? Lol

So i picked stu up on time almost, and then spent the next half hour wishing my car had air-con.

Arrived at hillingdon to see Simon H loitering about, fantastic. His first race of the year i believe, fresh from two weeks of booze and women in Miami. Not really what a training camp is for ay! But hey.

So after getting stu and i's bikes untangled out the back of my car, it was a squeeze! We decided to hit the track and get some warm up laps in... I hadn't ridden in two days, so wasn't sure how id feel, but i was ok. I was however inquisitive as to why there is now sod all parking at hillingdon!? Simon said there building some five-aside thingy, which us proper athletes will have use of for races... Cool. Don't know where we'll all park when its done though, i had to park on the road outside!

We then sat on the side of the track discussing all things cycling while the little youths fought it out. A superb solo ride to victory by a glendene rider certainly stood out. During this time, Keiran showed up. Brilliant, a four man team here, as well as a four/five man team at chertsey for the 3rds... Maybe we'll catch Dynamo after all!?

By this stage i was getting really excited, i was so up for this race it was unbelievable! My nemesis from Dunsfold last week was also present, so i was super motivated to beat him fair and square this week!

At the start i could barely control myself, i just wanted to race! Of we rolled, the pace was certainly brisk... For the first 15 minutes i concerned myself with almost every move at the front. But after a while i decided i wasn't so strong as last week. Probably due to having two complete rest days on thursday and friday. So i eased back and let it be.

Then Simon put in a dig, he and another guy got a good gap. Brilliant i thought, lets let these other b******s do some work! I was being closely watched by Hugo, my nemesis from last week, and his Team Economic-Energy mates. They didn't want to work, which seemed to be there tactic all day. So i casually pointed out that they didn't have a man up the road so perhaps they ought to start working. I got a mumbled 'they're not going anywhere' back. Then some other guys camr through and closed it down, but it was clear Hugo and his Eco boys were watching me.

Try as many did the race was destined for the bunch sprint... But that didn't stop a few awesomely assured moves by stu going away. This was perfect for simon and myself as it meant we could sit in and let the others chase. Of course the Eco boys were conspicous by there abscence! I've got to say stu put in an enormous amount of effort into getting off the front, which was superb for the team.

Come the penultimate lap, stu was back in the gruppetto, but there was a lone rider of the front. With nobody wanting to chase, both simon and myself were up front. I told him not to kill himself chasing, there were after all a couple of Eco boys behind us just hoping for us to die. (though not literally i hope!) I looked over my shoulder and there was Hugo bloody Robins just grinning.

Then Keiran came to the rescue, he put a valiant dig in up the finish straight with one to go which allowed me and simon to sit in and get towed to the line. After what must have seemed like an age to Keiran a couple of guys came through, i was perfectly placed, 4/5th wheel. Apparently, as we were roaring down the back straight, there were four or five riders fighting for my wheel. It seemed Hugo had been spreading the word that i was the rider to beat... Stu said they were all over my wheel, they must like the Zipps!

Through the last corner i still had two guys leading me out, So i started sprinting from the last bend. Brilliant i thought, i thought i was going to win... One guy left leading me out, i tried to make my move to pass him with about 100m to go... I got round him but just didnt have the power to carry on, a couple of guys came past me as i really slowed in the last 50m. But i came over the line in a solid 5th place. A decent result i think, and i beat Hugo into 6th/7th. So all was good!

So another 5 points on the board, up to 17 now, only 23 to go before the step up to 2nd... Bring it on.

Oh forget any rivalry between ACC and Mosquito (Although they were very aggressive throughout the race), and forget Dynamo even...

The real rivalry now is ACC v 'Team' Economic Energy

So a decent race for all, Stu just missed the top ten in 11th place, not bad for his first race as a 3rd cat! Simon rolled up in about 20th, and SUPER domestique Keiran finished comfortably just behind that. Not bad given he's been fighting illness all week. I have to say a massive thanks to the three of them as the way they raced today helped me perfectly. Be it Stu or Simons attacking, or Keirans super pace making on the final lap. I would have struggled to be so well placed in the final corner.

So THANKS! :P

Well done Adam again and Stu & Co - sounds like you had fun.

Are we all doing Cutmill? Hopefully there wont be any Economic-Energy (says it all) or thick-for riders.

brilliant race!

the weather was perfect and as we rolled off the line i got stuck in straight away...as it was my first 3rd cat race i took all the pressure off myself and told myself to get a nice work out, attack if i feel like it, chase down some breaks and not worry about placings at the end.

so in the first 3-4 laps i worked really hard, i chased down a break, found myself in a miniature one, and did a few turns on the front.

by lap 5 i was pretty tired, huffing and puffing, so i decided to sit in mid bunch until near the end when i decided i would spring an attack.

so with 8 laps to go i could barely contain myself. down the back straight the pace slowed and i made my move. i pulled out right onto the right hand side and dug into my pedals to get some distants between me and the pack. as i got to the start line i looked back and had a fairly decent gap so i put my elbows on the handle bars, and put my hands in a prayer position to make me nice and aerodynamic 8)

the spectators egged me on, and as i came down the back straight i looked back and a group of 3-4 were bridging the gap but they still had a bit to go. up the hill towards the finish and the slight headwind felt more noticeable as my legs began to burn substantially!...over the line and more cheers kept me going, as i came down the back straight again i looked back and the breakaway group were about 10m back so i slowed a bit to let them grab my wheel. i let them sit there for about 15 seconds as i was feeling pretty strong, then one of them came round to take a turn, that was pitifully small before he pulled over to let me through again, so i came through , then 1 more person came through and then no more, so i ended up dragging them around for 3/4 of a lap although i kept asking them to help, even playing the 'im willing to come 4th card' ...

with 4 or 5 laps to go we got pulled back in but i was still happy, i really enjoyed myself out there and was pleased i managed to stay away for an ok amount of time in a my first 3rd cat race...

needless to say until the last lap i sat in to let myself recover. then i fought my way to the top 15 or so, though not as daringly as a certain mozzie rider who was purposefully going onto the grass to over take people! .... as we came to penultimate bend i tried to get on adams wheel but there were a few others with the same idea and they were barging into each other to keep it. as we hit the hill the sprint started and almost immediately 2 people side by side in front of me died, luckily a big chap cut in front of me and literally separated the 2 dead people with his elbows which allowed me to come through... i looked over and saw adam a few bike lengths in front with a few riders strung behind him, so dug deep and took a few more places in the sprint, but just missed out on a top 10 and came 11th...im pretty pleased though as it was my first 3rd cat race, and i had done a lot of hard work in my breakaway!

25miles and average of 25mph...great ride!

cheers
stu

Well done guys. And you really couldn't tell any of you (as well as Chertsey racers) had been racing yesterday given the pace on today's ride.

The racing and results sections, once desert areas on this forum, now seem to be the busiest - and we're only mid-April :D I pity Andrew who has to collate results for the road race secretary ...

Haha, and had i not got so pissed last night, i would have been working more too. As it was just following the wheels was hard enough.

Well, apart from my sprint victory

Hi Guys, finaly time to post some stuff. Well it was good to race again after 3 weeks away from racing, and with 3 other ACCer's. Hats off to Adam and Stu 5th and 11th i believe. Adam was marked in the race (I heard others talking about him etc) and did his turns on the front. The group stayed together all the way through, no break aways were allowed to get more than a few hundred metres. Adam's account about the end is slightly incorrect t as I did my bit on the last lap. The pace was picking up and I made my way to the front where Adam and Stu were already, going down the long flat straight section on the final lap I decided to go for it, knowing full well I'd be swallowed up by the bunch sprint on the hill finish, but I hoped Adam and Stu would jump onto my wheel for a nice lead up to the hill. So I put all my effort into a sprint (my speed went up to around 33-34mph and heart to around 200bpm) before the second last bend and was in front coming round the last bend, but the second I hit the hill the others swarmed around me and I sat up and got past the line almost last. I hoped my sprint upped the pace and kept some of the pure sprinters from using Adam and Stu to tow them to the finish and then jumping past them. I knew I would not have got a placing in the final sprint as I realise I hate group sprint finishes and tend not to chance things as much as others so usually lose out to them, hence I prefer CP as it breaks up the bunch more. Anyway a good day out and a nice run home with Simon.

Sorry keiran, i wasn't sure exactly what happened in the last lap! My memory of the race was a little hazy as i just had my head down following the wheel in front and building to the sprint...

...but your effort definately strung the race out in the last lap and i had to really work to get on your wheel!

Cheers,

Adam
