that is correct. In fact you rejoin where you were at the time, so if in a breakaway that is still going, then you rejoin the breakaway.
To be technically correct,
this is only permitted on a circuit that is less than 2km in length, and is for "mechanical difficulties" - all of which is open to interpretation by the Chief Commissaire.
As a footnote, always follow the course to complete a lap, otherwise you WILL be deemed to be a lap down (famous incident a few years ago when Chris Newton used a slip road to cut back to the pits and then won the National Crit Champs, only to be relegated)
