Kingston Pheonix 10

Postby Andrew G » Sat Apr 28, 2007 6:03 pm

...continued

For some reason I'd thought it would be a good idea to ride two 10s in a day. The Kent one at bloody hell o'clock, and then this Pheonix one with a 2pm start. Kingston stuff is always very well organised, so no problems here

I wasn't sure how I'd go as either the morning effort would have got my legs spinning a treat, or I'd blow up spectacularly. My Dad rode down to support the Agreeables at this so we had a bit of support.

Did a proper warm up for once (normally my warm up is pathetic and consists of just riding to the start line  )

Under starters orders and I was off. I was pushing along pretty well and felt okay, no grumbles, other than you'd expect, from the legs. Had a bit of a tail wind so the ride out was quite rapid.

After the turn there was a nasty little head wind between the turn and Beare Green roundabout, so miles 5-7 were a real slog. Seemed to get a bit easier after that and I managed to keep the power down.

Crossed the line absolutely knackered, but knew I'd done a decent performance, so happy. Back to HQ and I had a 26:30 and a PB by 28 seconds :D . Doubley pleased as that previous PB was on a perfect night when nearly everyone on the Evening 10 set a PB. Back on standard race bike today and much more comfortable and happier than my brief experiment with the tri-bars.

I thought I was mad doing two in one day but Tamar trumped me, clearly on for another "quiet" year. Having riden on tandem with Paul this morning, she rode tandem with Keith this afternoon, before going out again for a solo ride. Also good to see Tel out for his debut this season.

Tamar & Keith (Tandem) 21:51
Tamar (solo) 26:03 - like I said another quiet one!
Your truly 26:30 PB
Terry 26:41

The only problem now is the alarm has to stay at 4:30 to marshall the ACC 25. Must remember to take a big flask of strong coffee with me.

Too tired for maths, pb by 18 secs not 28. Yes Snoop rather pleased, had a couple of "recovery drinks" this evening but left nice and early - the place was filling up with school kids anyway, felt like a right old git.
Off to bed now for the second stupidly early alarm call 2 days running.

Keith had been grumbling that I should've ridden solo in the morning too. Not that would just have been silly!

Great result in pm Andrew. Won't be long before you're flying past me.

Embarassingly Keith went faster on his own in pm than on the tandem with me. I am hoping it is some aerodynamic issue rather than me not pulling my weight!

You could argue that it was Keith not pulling his weight on the tandem, saving himself for his solo ride.

Easy peasy! must be all those 2 x 20's you've been racking up [quote="Marco"]Tamar it might be a wise to point out that you were riding on the tandem with Keith C from the BEC rather than our own sprightly septugenarian Keith Wawman who many know from down the cafe!!!
Thanks Marco, I actually thought Tamar was talking about Keith Knight...Forgive me for not be up on the latest racing couplings. I'm guessing Keith was the fella Tamar was proudly holdng hands with at the Good Friday Track meet

Err, no. I'm grateful for all the advice people gave me but I just couldn't stand doing it on the turbo. I only managed about 4 sets before the turbo got put away again.
Instead I try and do a couple of hard digs on one of my commutes home on the uphill or drag sections. Probably only works out as more of a 2x10 and probably not at full threshold, but close. I ride my bike for fun and can do these on the road and enjoy them, I just can't enjoy anything on the turbo.

Oh and Toks I spotted this in you 2007 Goals.

4. Do a short/long 22 on a road bike

Those are a couple of very tough targets, a lot of quick and experienced testers can't do those times. Got any dates booked on a dual carriageway yet? :D

Q10/19 = Tonbridge Bypass on May 12th (Have to get in quick). Before June I know but the only one left on that course with the downhill start. I can't do that day so have to wait until next year and hope the finish marshals stand in the right place this time!

Oh and if you want fast courses they'll probably all be early (6:30am) first rider starts  . 25s might be anyway as they need to get 100+ riders down the road before they get too busy.

Keith has assured me that it was never his intention to separate lungs from bodies....but rather himself and a select few others from the bunch. Sadly it was not to be.
