Many people regard riding up and down the A1 as absurdly dangerous but then they haven't ridden at Chertsey  Glad to see that most appear to be capable of typing even if they are a bit sore and shaken.

Today was a trip to Tempsford (just south of Bedford) to ride on the latest version of the F1/25 (basically a 25 course that goes up and down the A1). Stupidly early start to make sure riders are off the A1 before the traffic starts only to be greeted by what was clearly a strong breeze as I drove up.

Paul T and myself rode this on what, in good conditions, can be a quick course. In a wind, however, it's a completely different story.

Started well and was flying along. Cadence up above 100rpm for the first couple of minutes which is remarkable for me as I'll normally grind along between 80 and 90 rpm. Took a quick time check at 2.5 miles to find I'd done it in 2m 50s  Another 20 seconds to realise my computer was showing elapsed time rater than distance

At 5 miles in 10m 30 sec and was flying, unfortunately at 7.5 miles we had to turn round and come back. It was like hitting a brick wall with what seemed like a gale-force wind blowing directly along the A!

I tend to ride with just a single front chain ring as most TT courses are relatively flat and I'd been telling Paul before the start that the inner ring was a waste of time on a course like this. Well on the way back I kept on reaching for the front derailleur lever, pity it wasn't there

Very tempted to just stop at the HQ on the way past but struggled on. At 20 miles we turned again but by that time I was a broken man just wanting to get it over and done with. Just to kick you in teeth the last mile turned off the A1 onto a single carriageway road and back towards the wind again.

Finished with 59.48. PVT did a 1.02.12.

Still under the hour. 8)

Was it always a head or tail wind, or were there any "sail" moments with wheels?

I hope it's not windy for those fifties we've got planned on there.

It was grim  , cold  and very windy  , and after having lost the will to live  , let alone ride a bike when I got to the far turn (5 miles to go - 48 minutes), gale force wind behind - 30mph easy  = 58 minutes........only 24 mph, checked  brakes not locked on - no, puncture - no, it was just ###### hard going, and then, to add insult to injury, the finish was a mile further down the lane than it used to be, and it was uphill INTO the wind - unbelievable - my slowest proper 25 for nearly 3 years :!:

BTW well done ro RV for getting under on such a day.

Time trialling - fun :?:

There's always next week - a tandem 10 off at 6:04  and a 50 on Sunday at 7:10  ......great
