Tyre advice

Postby Dominic » Sun May 06, 2007 10:03 am

I am currently running Michelin Krylions on my road bike. This is the bike that gets used for all my riding, commuting etc. The Krylions are good and pretty puncture resistant.

I am thinking of changing soon and want to try Vittoria Open Corsas. I have tried the Rubino Pros in the past and found them a bit slippy in the wet. Has anybody got any experience of the Open Corsas?

Sorry no advice for you mate. But I am in a similar position myself.

My Bontrager Hardcases have been on my bike since I bought it two years ago. And I am on the look out for something quick, grippy and hopefully as hard wearing. Conti GP4000's seem to be getting some praise, any one used them?

Have changed from Vittoria Open Corsa to Continental GP 3000 which give far better grip on corners.
The Vitts were on the bike when I skidded on the roundabout in Redhill last year and ended up in hospital. Seemed to skid a lot in the wet too.
I still have a brand new pair of them if you want to try them. Going cheap.

Always ridden GP3000's, now the 4000's. Rode 3000's on my Bianchi from new and each pair lasted approx 2000 miles and didn't get any punctures at all for about 5 years, (only 1 in 6 years). Any time someone on the club run had a puncture it never seemed to be on a conti GP3000. They never slipped in the wet and gripped the road fantastically in the dry. The 4000's seem to be as good, if not better and they are said to last longer.

There may be longer lasting tyres out there but as an overall grippy, tough durable race/training tyre, I don't think you can get better.

Best price - Ribble

Same as Steve, always used GP3000s, now GP4000. Excellent grip in all conditions and a fast tyre as well. Punctures are extremely rare, I flirted with ProRace when I got my new bike and although they are a bit more grippy in the dry (never used in wet) I had 3 punctures in 2 weeks. I may have been unlucky but either way they came off straight away and I'll stick to the GPs.

Only note is they do cut a bit, this may be a problem with all soft compound tyres though. It doesn't seem to cause any more punctures or increase wear. Periodically remove the tyres, superglue the larger cuts closed, and refit. Good as new. :D

"Loctite Super Glue".

The method I use which seems to work okay:
1) Pinch the tyre to open the split.
2) Blow hard in to the gap to clear any dust/debris.
3) Drop a bit of glue in.
4) Pinch the tyre back the other way and hold the split together tightly for a couple of minutes. The glue should have set enough to hold it.
5) Repeat for all cuts.
6) Leave tyre alone overnight or for a day to let the glue really cure properly. You need to do this, when I've refitted the tyre and inflated straight away the gap can open under the pressure.
7) Refit the tyre.

I've been using 4 Seasons on my all-purpose road bikes for a few years now, and really like them.

The fella who first sold me them in Condor Cycles really likes them too. He talked to me about the rubber compound for over 20 minutes...

I use them for racing and love them (but I don't ride in the wet). I'll take them John :?:

I train (and early races) on Conti Duraskins, which have done '000 miles (bought them new to ride back from Geneva last September) and remain unmarked and unpunctured, but they are really slippery in the wet.

I'm not sure Open Corsa are up to commuting on a daily basis. And for 'best', I prefer ProRace - which seem to grip better, wet and dry. Gatorskins are reasonably puncture-proof for a couple of thousand miles and still pretty light and fast. For extra reliability and greater resistance-training, try Aramadillos.

It's interesting other people's experience with tyres. I wouldn't touch Gatorskins with a barge pole after buying a pair and having four punctures on them in the same day. It was a long day  It has also put me of the whole Continental range.

I have communted on Pro Race and found them fine, I will try the Open Corsas and may even put them on my TT bike. For the deal I have got from John they are well worth trying. :D

I have to agree with Armadillos, in my experience by far and away the most puncture proof tyre I have had, not too spritely though. I usually use them in the winter.

It's obvious - he's bought a classic 1970s Hillman and parked it close to Crystal Palace in the hope that Stu will crash into it and he can claim on the insurance
