The Fast and Furious World of Crit Racing

Postby George » Sun May 20, 2007 11:37 pm

After a disappointing pair of ACC punctures this morning at the SERRL road race I still felt like I needed a good workout. So I decided to join Jon and Adam down at the Crawley Town Centre Crit Tonight.

Was 3rd reserve and GREAT I got a ride, they let me in even without my licence which I didn't want to wait 2 hours for this morning

We had a brief warm up lap but at the start there were already tons of rider lined up, I got in there around mid pack but unfortunately Jon and Adam were right at the back.

As we set off we soon realized that starting from the front is a great advantage, as the course is so tight with lots of tight sharp dangerous corners that the field gets strung out.

From the gun the pace was instantly flat out, every corner you had to take as fast as possible to carry enough speed on the exit to stay on. Out of every-corner you had to be out of the saddle flat out honking which was required also to stay in contention.

I saw at least 4 nasty crashes and I don't mean small gravel rash inducing slip offs, I mean cart-wheeling over the bars and pile-driving into the street furniture straight into the ambulance kind of crashing

Boy was I lucky on a couple of occasions to avoid these guy's who kept hitting the deck right in-front of me.

It was great fun racing through the streets on the closed roads, all the spectators cheering us on really felt good.

The first half of the race I felt pretty rotten, I was struggling to breath and catch breath but luckily for me I seemed to keep getting these second winds after the half way point.

Jon caught up with me after 15 mins or so and I was a little poached at the time which he saw and offered his wheel.

I accepted this for about a lap and then as we were passing some lapped riders Jon shouted "on your left" but someone else shouted "to your right" so the plonkers moved right into Jon's line and boxed him right into the barrier to a standstill. Fortunately for me I wasn't held up and cracked on, but Jon was forced to retire after this.

I was really beginning to enjoy the enforced suffering around the super tight circuit and managed to pick off quite a few riders who were spat out, Marek was really giving some great encouragement.

Ian and Jo were there as well as Paul on the Pearson's and quite a few other agreeables, Hell even the Photographer from Croydon Advertiser was shouting Come on George :P

I was starting to pass a fair amount of lapped riders and picked them off whooshing round the tight cobbled/Kerb strewn corners. Passed Adam after about 30 mins, I think he was pissed off from starting right at the back.

The surface was well rough with lots of manholes sleeping police man, my bike and wheels were taking one hell of a hammering and so was my cardiovascular system, I must have been maxed out for 45mins!

It wasn't untill after the finish I realized how much effort I had exerted to race round there, I was coughing my lungs up and having difficulty braething, mind you I'd had a cold all week :?

To be honest I was happy just to finish without visiting the hospital  but was chuffed to get a solid ride in and not drop too far off the lead guy's.

Yep, that just about sums it up really. I will never start a criterium at the back again!

It was the hardest ride of my life tonight, but i really enjoyed it. The hardest but single most fun race ever!

As the race started it was clear it was going to be super quick, and the trouble was i kept having to pass riders as they were losing contact with the wheel in front. Then after three laps gone, with my heart rate still pumping at 190bpm i began to feel my efforts. I was so close to the back of the already very thinned down 'peloton' but i just couldn't make contact. So i backed it off and settled into my own rythm. I then realised that the circuit is awesome! Although the corners look fearsome, when your on your own you can pick a perfect line thru them and they were so quick! I don't think ive ever cornered so fast in my life, it was soooooooooooooooooooooooo fun! A taste of alpine descending i wonder?

So on my own i was for a few laps until i settled into a group of 4 riders who were just happy to ride around and soak up the atomosphere of a large crowd. I/We did get lapped by the main bunch and then again by the lead two riders later on, which included Toby Meadows who is a Junior. But a bloody strong guy, remember his name, i bet he'll be pro in a few years time... but to be honest, im not as strong as i have been this season, and even if i had been life would still have been tough. So i wasn't at all dissapointed, it was more a learning race for me anyway, i would have liked to have been more competitive but thats the way it goes i guess.

Anyway, it was just really nice to race in front of what was probably a good few hundred spectators. Especially when theres a few of em shouting 'c'mon adam get up there!' which was Ian i think!? Also my sister and her boyfriend came to watch me which was nice so even more incentive not to pull out early. But once i settled into it i would have ridden round there all night, what a fantastic circuit! I slipped around a couple of the corners but once i found my limits i was fine. Nearly made use of one of the hay bales on the first lap but lickily there was on need! Also manged to slip my way through the two crashes that i saw, apparantly there were a couple of other spills here and there. So i was glad to stay upright as George says and avoid a trip to A&E!

But seriously, watching the Elites after really made me feel insignificant too. But they do have a few years on me so im not complaining. One day... maybe  But they were super quick, and a what a sprint by Simon Gaywood to clinch the win from in form Deano Downing. Great stuff.

I will do my best to make the Guildford crits too, i believe it will be a 3rd cat only support race this time so maybe ill be a little bit more competitive... And if anyone can make it down to watch, you'll be in for a feast of racing! It is on Wednesday 11th July at about 7pm, bring the family along too!

Fast, Furious, but my oh my, what a race!

I did warn you.......Glad that you enjoyed your intro to crit racing. I always loved it.

There used to be loads of these in town centres all over the place, Maidstone, Sevenoaks, Romford, Bexley etc, but costs have spiralled pricing them out of the market - barriers, closed roads etc etc.

Guildford is a great circuit - rode it once as a 2nd cat in the E12 and boy oh boy talk about speed - sheer lunacy, especially through the bottom corner  .

You might want to reconsider using Zipps though as the cobbled section up the hill to the finish is like Paris-Roubaix

Yes i have heard about the cobbles, i think im gonna try to get down there before hand to reccy the course...

Mind you the speed bumps last night were giving the zipps one hell of a bashing but they seem to be ok!

Where have you been this weekend stu!?

It was an awsome course, felt more like a bmx race at times! (there was even a hump on the back straight that I unintentionally aired off a few times)

I totally screwed up by not paying attention to when the race was starting and ended up right at the back. This was made worse by the fact that the organisers had expanded the field significantly from the original 50.

Anyways I gradually worked my way up from the back dodging the many casualties as they fell in front of me. Eventually I got to George and realised how far the front group were ahead of us, there was obviously no way I could catch them. I tried anyway, then, a few laps later as I came round a corner there were two guys riding side by side at about ten miles an hour just having a chat and blocking the track off. I said, "on your left" but they ended up moving left and everyone else behind wooshed past! I shouted some obscenity so hard that my dry throat seemed to close up and I lost my ability to breath normally. This was the final straw, I pulled out on the next lap and enjoyed spectating for the rest of the race.

Well done George and Adam for sticking it out, you both looked completely ruined afterwards, but then so did everyone!

Aww man, where's all the pix of me sweeping thru those bends!? I lost count of the amount of flashes that went off in my face from the LCS photographer!

See what i mean though, how fun was that! Some guys even managed to pedal through a couple of those bends  That was the most ive ever heard my tyres squeel, it was very un-nerving at times!

If you have gone as far as emailing John to get the hi-res version of the photo so that you can print it on A3 and frame it .... yes.

I've done it once ... but it was for a magazine article :D
