Nove Colli 2007. 20/05/07

A Place to idle the day away talking about anything you fancy. Expect to find cycling and non cycling topics inside

Thanks for the concern about Andrew shown by a number of Agreeables on the clubrun today. He phoned just as I was about to leave for it.
He is now more distressed mentally than physically, missing out on all the rides, and bored in the hotel as Sean and Adrian go out all day. But it sounded a bad fall from what he said (much worse than his prang in the ill-fated Chersey race in April!)
He came off on gravel on a bend. Very bad gravel rash all down one side, and, at the time linked shock). He went off in an ambulance to a hospital. In the four hours he spent there he says he had superb treatment, fully examined, in a way which he says would put the Nat. Health Service to shame. It was covered by EU form 111, but they never even bothered with it; money and form-filling didn’t come into it.
He says bike seems OK (subject to a check by GB on return). He may take a taxi with Adrian's wife (I think) to see the start of the Nove Colli event at Cesenatico. As even walking is a bit painful he scatched from that right away.
But no doubt he’ll be posting more at length on his return!
He does say that the Perla Hotel in Riccione and the staff there is superb — he is already talking about a return visit! :)
He now has the annoying prospect of lugging his very heavy bike bag, through train changes in Milan and Paris, back to Waterloo, where I'll be picking him up around 1pm Tuesday.

First of all, best wishes to Andrew for a swift recovery. I guess it's a good excuse to go back and have another, more productive, holiday.

As and when my therapist drags the details out me, I'll write a full report on the day as I saw it. Suffice to say I wasn't strong, as I felt really sick after the first couple of climbs and couldn't take on any more energy drink, so survived on only water, 1½ Powerbars and a small plate of pasta that I forced down. Adrian stopped to check I was ok when I punctured up the final climb, but carried on when I assured him I was ok and just pacing myself (!!!....).

In hindsight I was happy that I had the good sense not to push myself too much and just go round 'piano'....and that none of the climbs beat me. My riding time was 9½ hrs for the 132 miles.

Thanks to Andrew, Sean and Adrian for the inspration and support.

D.
ps Raimondo Rumsas won, 'naturally', with a time of 5hrs 47mins

Pics not great quality as taken on a throw away camera which really couldn't cope with the very bright sunlight.

Do not approach these men under any circumstances! Sean and Dave, when in Italy....pose.

Okay I'm brave/stupid enough, thanks to Sean for the pic this is what I looked like when they'd finished with me at the hospital...

I'm going back next year Adam, but will be end of April when it's a bit cooler. So no NC for me, but then it was so hot I know I'd struggle in those temperatures.
Still do 100+ very hilly km a day (with a rest day in the middle somewhere) on the guided hotel rides though.

Am now back in Blighty after a week in Switzerland following the fantastic week's riding in Italy. Am planning to put a full report up here, but need a while yet to get my thoughts and recollections together, not to mention place names, gradients and the like.

What it boils down to, though, is that it was the best cycling experience I've ever had and, all other things being equal, I will definitely be going back next year!

Seamus H, far too many graphics/decals on the frame.

Cinelli always have those wierd oversized name graphics on their frames, looks very odd. I'm sure I'd read something somewhere about some dubious build quality on there frames too, don't tell Mark the Cannibal eater.
