I'd heard the Bentley Bypass could be quick so was hoping I might get close to Joyce's 30 record of 1.16.16.
It was not to be.
Set off into a head wind. Accelerated to 24mph and tried to settle into a rhythm. No chance. Soon was struggling to do 20mph. Seriously thought about packing in at 1st r'bt and heading back to HQ. Decided to stick it out to the 2nd r'bt (the proper turn) and see what the return leg felt like. Return leg felt better with tailwind but my back ached and my legs weren't smooth. Couldn't stop thinking about having to turn again for the second leg up into the headwind. Was awful. Kept entertaining thoughts of sneaking back to HQ. Finally got to the finish in what I thought was a long 1.18...but timekeeper said 1.19.01. Hmmph. Slow thumb I reckon.
Truly dismal ride. Did not try hard enough. Luckily I rode a bit better on Sunday so finished weekend feeling more positive than I'd started it.
S Davies of ACC also rode on Saturday but I forgot to check his time - doh! Sorry.
