Definitely going for a compact with a 12-27 cassette now. And today I got my new credit card so that gives me interest free till March.

But hearing the recent announcement of the new Ultegra gruppo with its compact and rumors of a DA compact do I go ahead with the R700 compact or wait for the DA one?

Thing is I wanted the new bike for the London to Paris ride end of July, and could do with training on it first :?

I will check the gear charts on Sheldon Brown for 50/34 with 12-25. I just remember a 34-27 giving a very similar gain ratio to a 30-25. And it would be a handy bail out for the Westerham Hills of the world.

Why not just divide 34 by 27 and then 30 by 25?

I have bought a 12-27 recently. The only diffference between the 12-25 and the 12-27 is the top two gears. Basicallly its;

12-25 = 12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23,25
12-27 = 12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,24,27

Most of the time, I am sitting in the 12-21 range and this is exactly the same on each. The 27 gives you that extra gear for the 1 in 4's..

Good point.

Just about to ring GBs :)

Going for Conti GP4000S's at the mo. Are they pretty tough and grippy? Good in the wet? The Bontrager Hardcases on my Trek haven't p**nctured once since I have had it.

GP4000s are ace.

Make sure you get a good price and choose a groovy colour. Got mine for about 20 notes each.
