The best week of your life - Ride the Grand Tour Cols

A Place to idle the day away talking about anything you fancy. Expect to find cycling and non cycling topics inside

Hi Huw,

I may not be able to make it for the whole week, that is, I have a company ride in Pau and need to be there on Friday 28th. The (embryonic) plan is to fly into Grenoble on the 23rd/24th spend some days there and then hire a car to drive over to the Pyrenees and fly out of Pau.

Is it possible to pay a daily rate at the hotel?

David.

I would have come , but i have already arranged my trip to the same area, I am going on the 10th and coming back on the 19th, i found a lovely house in the area at a good price- it sleeps 10!
I am aiming to ride a few of the cols- plus some time in grenoble and a trip to lyon.

Cheers,

Thought you were worried about the heat?

Decided it would probably be okay at the end of September. Will be taking my factor 50 though.

If we have six definites at the end of June - I'll ask for deposits and book it - that'll give us enough time to get cheap flights

Huw, I think you'll have to count me out of this one now I'm afraid.
Work schedule means it's best for me to go before the end of September.

In any case I wouldn't have been stationed in one place as it's a point to point trip (from the Alps to the coast) with panniers, so if I'd come along with you guys I would only have stayed a couple of days tops.

I'll feed back any news to you from my trip though.

On a separate note, for those interested, I've updated my blog - a couple of race reports and links to future events.

Just got to book my time off for that week and I'm there. May even book the flight tomorrow as I was given the green light today to claim up to £150 for flights on expenses. I beleive Ryanair only have one flight a day from Stanstead to Grenoble so will book that one on Sunday 23rd. Currently comes to c.£96 avec bike one way (flying back from Pau).

Chaps, as there is only one flight to Grenoble on 23rd I suggest we make a decision on this:

Looks like 7 definites

Huw
Amy
Dave Lombari
Mlocke
Andrew Green
Paul T
Grant B

Which will leave space for one more person if anyone wants to join in later on.

POST HERE IF YOU ARE A YES SO I CAN BOOK IT AND WE CAN ARRANGE FLIGHTS

Estimated cost: £375 per person (2 sharing twin room) includes all food and wine and beer + £50 transfer to and from Grenoble airport

Flights currently look like about £100 per person including bike and is RyanAir from Stanstead

I'll confirm all costs later today

I'M A YES. Cheers Huw.

Re booking the flights, first time I've flown with a bike do I need to do anything different to just a normal online booking? i.e. tick any boxes or fill anything alse in to say I'll have a bike with me? Cheers.

Oh and I know I'm being ignorant here but the return flight will be Saturday 29th yes? (Sounds a silly question I know but different holiday places define a week as different things).

Ta.

Yeah 29th return

Should have all the details about booking bikes etc on the ryanair website

Suggest everyone waits until later on today and I'll have confirmation of the hotel prices etc then we can book the flights

Andrew, on the ryanair booking site there is a field that allows you 2 tick that you're taking bicycles/sports equipment. Then another field comes up asking you for £15 for each leg of your journey.

There isn't really anything else you need 2 say to them. You might wanna just get your bike insured for overseas travel (if you haven't done so already).

Enjoy the trip !

I got a bus from airport to Bourg and they were happy to take bikes. Need to check schedules, but was only a few euros, or does that include airport pickup?
