crystal palace 12/6/07....ANOTHER addiscombe win!!

Postby Stu Merckx Man » Tue Jun 12, 2007 9:54 pm

another great A team out today, and some great support. i think there were about 7-9 addiscombes out there tonight :D

so the race started and i made a bee line for sylv who was already up the front.

after about 3 laps i had made my way up there in the top 3-7. i was pleasantly surprised to not only have sylv up there for company but hal was also up there.

for a good amount of laps us 3 pretty much controlled the race. taking turns on the front, brining back escapees, i thought i was in heaven! could we keep this up the whole race?!?!....no

about mid way through we were joined by about 5 other strong riders. a guy from rapha condor who i have seen a lot recently, a bloke from pearsons, i think 2 duwlich lads and 1 kingston wheelers. they came past us in an attack but we managed to grab on. for the next 6 laps the pace was hot!!

the rapha condor bloke was like an animal just grinding it up the hill lap after lap, making it very uncomfortable. thankfully it started to calm down with about 15 minutes left.

10 minutes to go and i was hurting. i had probably done a bit more work than i should have done and i was finding it tough up the hill. people kept going for long ones which upped the pace even more.

0 minutes to go!! in other words about 3 laps. someone my about my age, and one of his team mates break away. i managed to bridge the gap and we started a through and off. we worked really hard and i thought we could stick it out...but with 2 laps to go we were reeled in....dam now i felt fried!!

we went passed the line for the final lap. i took the wheel of the boy who was in the break before. as we got to the hair pin he suddenly motored and took me by surprise! he had a gap and i gritted my teeth and hammered it over to him. i look back and theres a 30m gap behind up! hes still at it, full on sprinting! it looked like he was trying to drop me!!

i was hurting a lot though and my legs were on fire. then the inevitable happened...as we came out of the corner by the bank he gave it the elbow for me to come round...dam but my legs hurt!. i look back and we had about 40m or so...then out of instinct or something like that, i suddenly find my self sprinting past him!...i look back again and theres still a gap, but theres a long way to the line....go for it i told myself, don’t play it self and save yourself, give it a go!...

i dug deep and kept my head down...my legs were screaming at me to stop. luckily i had been watching some cycling videos on you tube and the song from this video was going through my head... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CavN620FFQ ...its now or never stu!!
i came to the top of the hill and looked back again, i still have 30 metres!! comon stu 1 more kick to be safe! i truly buried myself into the pedals  . i look up and see its not far, and look back and see i still have a good gap :o . i eased up slightly and absorbed the atmosphere  , i could hear the cheers from the crowed lining the finish, and in the corner of m eye saw toks, and some others in addiscombe colours. I had to quickly think of my victory sign… im basically at the line so I just settled for sticking my arms up in the air..i had done it! i won!!!!! :o :D  it almost seamed to good to be true, and i was just waiting for someone to tell me someone had got away earlier, but the news never came thankfully  i think sylv got another 6th! so hes been pretty consistant...its his turn next week!

average speed 24.5

cheers
stu :D

Fantastic Stu. Superb report, I was with you all the way but thought your legs weren't going to hold on.

Another Addiscombe win yes, but I think this one is special from such a young member. True inspiration for the young(er) members of the club.

Fantastic, all that training and hard work you have been putting in has really paid off. You have improved imensely this year and I am really really happy for you.

I am glad you enjoyed the moment and were able to give a victory salute.

This will do wonders for your confidence and the rest of the year you will be hard to beat, so keep it up.

Cheers

Marek....

Well Done Stu

That was a true classy win that I had the pleasure of witnessing tonight

Stu and Sylv were well up the front all during the race, I did noticed Stu wasn't dragging everyone round like he was the last few weeks and tiring his legs, which is a smart move.

I could sense that Stu was gonna try something tonight, as I cheered everyone on, like he said a few laps to go he broke away but was reeled back in.

I thought he was totally fried from that effort but I was wrong

Last lap Stu moved into position A, 3rd back with a small gap over the peloton, then they raced off down the hill and Stu was motoring.

Next time we saw him he was a good 20m ahead on his own coming into the final sprint.

He easily cruised over the line to a well deserved Victory salute.

Well done to Sylv, Kieran and Matt for finishing well!

Steve the Shadow managed to last 40 mins with the peloton this time, I'm sure he'll be in the sprint soon

Toks seemed to be on a training ride towing Hal around and a few other 3rds :)

In the E12's there was a super strong 4 man breakaway with Eric Rowsell, Matt Seaton, Daniel Santini and Brett Perez.

True CLASS from ERIC, it was a shame our man Jon wasn't also in the break I'm sure he could have managed the pace, Well done Jon on 6th in the sprint 10th overall.

A great Addiscombe night all the crowds at the finish line were well envious of us agreeables

Stu, f**k me, thats bloody awesome! One of my goals this season was to win at the palace, but its looking real distant right now. Then another ACC'er goes and puts one over me! Fantastic stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's not many more people that deserve to win right now more than you, so well done mate!

Shame i wasn't there to witness your heroics! However, in the evening ten i did have my own personal victory...

Do you all remember that rather over exitable Junior who was chomping at the bit in November/December to start racing. He won at Palace tonight and it was a real classy win too. Not one of those 'just by a whisker jobs'. Well done Stu that was a pleasure to watch :D :D :D

Awesome win Stu.
Even though I was so far back I had no chance of seeing it. :)

Anyway, I was just saying to Toks before the start how this time last year Stu was getting dropped on the training group rides.
You probably won't have slept much tonight as the race will be on auto rewind in your head.

Great support from George et al and another great ride from Sylv. Mate, it's your turn to win next :)
