SCCU 100 Anyone....?

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Oooo crikey - I've just signed the entry form for the above, gulp!! Closest I've been to this is a 25...

This event takes place about ten days after my family holiday to Italy, oh Doctor it's gonna hurt!

Anyone else having a go at this.....?

I hope I get in to this one - If I get round I plan to do the Anerley 50 in August and scoop the wooden spoon for the SCCU BBAR 8)

Splendid plan Mr Snoop Sir. This one's in my calendar too.

Errr - we're gonna need some helpers for bottles!

You will love it (...a couple of days afterwards). I did my first 100 having only ever ridden 10s and 25s. I figured if I did a 50 it might hurt so much it would put me off anything longer. :)

Drinking and eating is the key. It's kinda hard to do it when you're guts ache and you feel like puking, but you just have to keep shovelling it in.

Oh, and nice work with 10 pb.

I am planning to do this as well. I am also intending using the Herts and Middx 100 on 15/07 as a warm up.

Looking forward to it

Snoop, to survive a 100 I suggest a two-pronged approach.

1 - get some miles in
2 - find an energy drink that doesn't make you puke

Number 2 is probably more important than number 1.

You will need to drink at least 3 bottles of the stuff, probably more, and believe me when you're hunched over in an aero position and trying to maintain 20+ mph your guts are not particularly receptive to quantities of sticky gunk being poured in. But you have to ignore the stomach cramp and taste of fresh vomit in your throat and keep swallowing it down.

If not you will go pop at around 70 miles and it will feel awful.

Don't set off at '10' pace. Reign it in a bit, but equally don't dawdle. Find a nice comfortable rhythm and then switch your brain off. I like to ride 100s on avg speed rather than distance or time. I find distance and time tick away far too slowly, so I just have current speed, average speed and heart rate to keep me focussed.

Sing songs to yourself to keep your cadence and spirits up. Trick yourself into believing you're having a good time. Keep pedalling. Keep drinking...from really early on. I managed to get a bottle down me in the first 30 miles last w/e. The 2nd bottle didn't go down so well (sickly gunk) so I took my 3rd bottle which was flavourless Torq and quite refreshing after the sticky cr*p in first two. I also snaffled a couple of fig rolls 'cos I love 'em. Some people use bananas but they don't appeal to me.

You can put an extra bottle cage under your saddle to enable you to carry four bottles....but it's much better to have a helper handing you fresh drink so you're not burdened with the weight of several litres of juice.

Err, and that's it really as far as I've worked out. I've only ridden three 100s and the first two were pants. Only drank 1-1.5 bottles and finished in tears, completely blown. Finally got it right in the third one.

Oh, and check yer equipment! My tri-bars fell off in my second one (the road surface in the SCCU is pretty rough towards the end).

Good luck Cap'n!

Snoop - we'll try and sort things out a bit nearer the time but hopefully we will have a few helpers out on the course to hand up bottles etc.

Eating and drinking properly for a 100 is important and you'll be glad to know it starts well before the race. From Wednesday onwards up your carb intake, preferably 'healthy' stuff like wholegrain rice, pasta, porridge etc but I always take it as an excuse to have a cake after every meal

The day before you want to have a big meal. For Sunday morning I'd suggest having a largish lunch on Saturday as if you stuff yourself in the evening it can wreck yor sleep.

Morning of event try and eat about 3 hours before you start - porridge is the breakfast of champions but if you don't like it at least get some cereal/toast down etc

On the way to the event start drinking a carb drink. Preferably an isotonic one so Go rather than PSP if you're using SIS stuff. I then tend to have a banana about half an hour before I start just to leave some solid food in the stomach.

For the race you'll probably need 2 bottle holders. I would put a bottle of plain water in one and make up 4 bottles (3 if it's going to be wet & cool) of Go (or other carb drink) for the other. Start with one and then give the helpers the others. I would also carry 2 or 3 gels - but you can use anything else to give some extra carbs - banana, malt cake, jelly babies, fig rolls, jam sandwiches ... If the food is messy put it in a greaseproof paper bag there's nothing worse than sticking your hand in your pocket and getting covered in gunk

Drink regularly, mainly the carb drink. I aim to drink every 10 minutes or so 3 or 4 gulps. We will hopefully get some people out at about every 25 miles where you can drop your bottle and get a new one. The water is good to wash away the taste of the carb drink (which can be pretty awful after 4 hours) and to tip over your head if it's hot (however hot you are tipping carb drink over your head tends not to improve the situation  )

Hope that helps

I have now signed the form, written a cheque  and put it in the post. It looked a less painful option than Huw's Tour of the Black Mountains.

I roped my Dad in some time ago to do feeding (having not really given it much thought last year), so he can probably help out some others too.

Snoop, I have spent more time than is normal trying to make perfect porridge. I reckon I'm getting close. Soak it in water overnight, cook it gently with milk (add salt) and serve with chopped dried figs and sunflower seeds.
