campag AND shimano toegther.. in harmony?

i am seriously considering replacing my cannondale triple chainset with a campag compact.

this would give me a shimano drivetrain with campag cranks and wheels.

best of breed or a mongrel? yes i know this is why they invented fulcrum, but the cranks aren't out yet...

My winter bike is a great mixture. I am using veloce 10 speed shifters with Sora 8 speed casette and rear mech. And it all shifts perfectly.

:shock: how does that work, the 10 speed shifters with 8 speed cassette? do the highest 8 shift positions just correspond to the 8 cogs on the cassette? or is is something cleverer than that?

That is a combination that works because of the amount of cable pull from a campag rear mech, when the cable is routed to the far side of the cable clamp, and yes it does just mean missing out 2 clicks.

There are others and by altering the cable clamp they will pull differently. I will dig out my info and post them later.

hmm, so you're adjusting the leverage ratio at the mech...

i'm pretty sure at the front you can use any combination of shifter, crank and derailleur.

although i've just done a bit of research and realised there is a problem with my plan -- i'm still using 9 speed and the wider chain may foul on the front 10s chainring shift ramps

Ive not done anything clever, 10 speed campag seems to be the same index as 8 speed shimano.

You set the distance on shifts with the adjuster wheel where the cable clamps in the mech, so you shouldn't over/under shift once you've set it up. You'd have a spare click or two at the end but should be okay once you've set the cage with the adjuster screws.

I'm sure you can use a "10" chainring with a "9" setup and chain without any problems.

i'm surprised he can even countenance mixing the two!

i'll go with whatever seems best value, which doesn't necessarily mean cheapest, but the campag carbon chainsets

edit: ...look far better value than FSA/SRAM/Truvativ etc. And I have 100 quid in vouchers that I have had a year without spending...

Without boring you all to tears, it is very technical.

Shimano (did I just type that? :twisted: ) rear mechs pull a cable ratio of 58%, or if the cable is routed around the opposite side of the cable clamp, 64%. Pre 2000 campag was 70% and post 2000 67%. SRAM 100%, although in tests, it was measured at 90&.

The shifters also pull a diffeent amount of cable for each click - Shimano (again :twisted: ) 8, 2.78mm, 9 - 2.52mm, campag 9 3.05mm and 10 2.78mm.

If you do the math, you can work out that per shift, a shimano (!) 8 lever with a campag rear mech pulls 4.16mm per click, and campag 10 speed 4.15mm, which is so close as to be perfect.
