addiscombe vs norward paragon

Postby Stu Merckx Man » Tue Jul 10, 2007 9:40 pm

this is the 2nd time trial i have done before.

whereas the first one, the presidents 10, i cained it the whole way, i decided to try and ride tactically, if that makes sense

so my tactics- on the flats, and down hills ride at 90% of my max heart rate, on drags go up to 92-93, and up hills no more than 96% to make sure i could keep going down the other side.

so i set off, and then made a stupid mistake, i missed the left turning, and some frantic shouting by the marshal to turn left made me slam on the breaks, skid for 20 ft, then wip the bike round to go the right way. i recon it cost me about 6-10 seconds (excuses excuses)

also another problem was that my heart rate moniter was not working for the first mile, and when it finally kicked in, i was at 97%! so i quickely lowered it.

anyways, no sign of the minute man behind me until 7.5 miles, when i heard someone hit a hole about 50m behind me, i looked back and there he was.

i stuck with him for the rest of the way, yo yo-ing...i would tend to over take him at the brow of hills, and he would overtake on the way down , (no drafting was involved though!). at 8.5 miles i caught my minute man.

then for the last leg it was a hard sprint up a longish hill, and the bloke who had caught me gained about 30m or so on me, (although techinally a minute and a bit  )

however i was not too dissapointed, as adam informed me, that my minute man that got me was a 1st cat, so thats not too bad.

i was 3rd out the addiscombe lot. jon hemming was first out of us, then paul hone (although only 19 seconds ahead, and if it wernt for that wrong turning.... ), then me at 28.40, and then adam behind me at 28.42!!

im pretty pleased with that, and it was good fun.

cheers

Great ride Stu, and well done to everyone. It's a bit hard on us having the inter-club on that course as I believe Paragon use it regularly and we only go there once a year, but apparantly they're afraid of the A24 so won't do the Holmwood course which is our home.

I was marshalling on the bottom bend and your minute man was just behind you then Stu, although from your report I'm not sure if that was mid yo-yo rather than catching for the 1st time. The bloke on the corner with me from Paragon said he was a quality rider, who if he didn't win would be right up there, so sounds like you did well against him.

When we win - they dance to our rumba!

i know they dont like the usual 10 course, so just to give them a chance

every now and then we let them win and they get to choose a course -

perhaps next year they might relent and give our boys anice TT course.

mind you one of there guys done a 26" something tonight so they are no

slouches- at least one first cat, plus the illustrious Dave K (recently from

this parish).

Not an easy course at all as many- if not all- the riders will testify to. Not

yer pan flat sub 20 matey!

Got one picture of all Addiscombe riders. Need to sift through them and then I'll stick them all under this thread.

The light was a bit tricky being partially tree covered, still light but not bright daylight, so some of them are a bit over exposed but I'll see if I can rectify that a bit on photoshop first. Bloody auto focus digital, not a patch on a good manual focus SLR, but if I used that it would take ages to get them developed, scanned etc. Will probably use that next time though as the results are so much better (if I manage to get you in shot anyway :) ).

You've had a few useful training partners lately Mr.K.

Personally I think it's a good event and I don't care where it's run. Tonights course is actually a nice loop and a good test, they just had a lot of very good riders out tonight, and not all their best ones apparantly.

I'm sure we'd get closer, or maybe even win, with more practice on that course. Maybe next year we could get a bit more organised and do an alternate CR over there the week before to remind riders of the course. Nice roads round there so would make a good ride anyway.

Stu, I've done one of the photos for you now.

A big thanks to all the organisers. I thought the course was quite good and varied although that climb at the end was a bit of a harder than I was expecting. (Who said it was big ring all the way?).

There are a few photos here but no action shots I'm afraid, just the ride down there and back.

I enjoyed that. As last year's defending champion (& compiler of the startsheet) I was last man off. Went up the drag through Bletchingley fairly hard but in the saddle, not wanting to go into oxygen debt too early. At the turn off the A25 there was Chris Scarlett in a red t-shirt and waving his arms about, doing a passable impression of the Tour devil, all he needed was a pitchfork. Down the fast descent towards Outwood I hit my max speed for the night of 39.6mph. Probably lost a few seconds along here by not going flat out round some of the bends. Slowed right down at the Outwood T-junction turn, which can often by covered with gravel and a bit dodgy. Hopefully the paparazzi (a.k.a. Andrew Green) got a good photo there. Caught my minute man on the first of the climbs on the way back, and shortly afterwards my 3 minute man who was standing at the side of the road with his back wheel out. Flat out up the final hill I almost managed to achieve the "vomit in a bush" scenario hinted at by someone in the other thread. Finished 29 seconds slower than last year, which is about what I would have expected based on my form this year.

can anyone make sense of Paul's results? I know that TT nomenclature is obscure but still :)

Sounds like Stu drafted to me. Must be a least a 30 sec penalty for that.
