[quote]Gordon McCauley delivered an emphatic win for Plowman Craven Evans Cycles in the Guilford Town Centre Races this week (July 11), lapping the main field and finishing 10 seconds clear of a small chasing group of six riders.
Although not part of the National Circuit Series, Guilford is one of the biggest crits in the South and attracts most of the National Series riders. The Plowman Craven Evans Cycles squad were at the front throughout, sending a succession of riders up the road while team mates covered attempts to bring them back, and the race quickly began to split apart.
By half way a leading group of seven, including McCauley together with team mates Tony Gibb and James Millard, were well established and soon began lapping the field. The three Plowman Craven Evans Cycles riders used their advantage well and with around 20 minutes to go they launched an attack by McCauley who quickly built a lead of 10 seconds. While team mates Gibb and Millard sat in, the chasing group of Warrick Spence (Cyclefit/Serotta), Ross Muir (Rapha Condor), Jamie Newall (Evans) and Wouter Sybrandy (Agiskoviner) could make no impression on McCauley?s lead, and he stayed out in front to take the flag. The sprint for the remaining podium places saw Spence narrowly beat Gibb into third.
Speaking after his victory McCauley commented: "Finally a road win, and a win in style! It's nice to win in front of such a big crowd and the fact that it was the first race in the UK that my fiance Pam has watched makes it extra special."
"As ever it was really a Plowman Craven Evans Cycles team win - in the early part of the race the guys kept the pace high and broke up the field which helped Tony, James and me get into the break, and then the three of us began one-twoing the others until I got away and Tony and James protected my lead."
McCauley will be hoping to repeat his success on Friday (13 July) when he races the latest National Circuit Series event in Blackpool as part of the Blackpool Cycle Fest, which also includes the latest round of the Premier Calendar Series on Sunday (15 July).
Funny seeing an Evans RT rider chasing a Plowman Cravens/Evans RT one!
