MoD Chertsey on Saturday...

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

I'll be racing at 11 in the 3rds - Maybe a Cancellara sytle finish will keep you out of trouble !

well, I turned up at Chertsey today to find only adam from ACC and Tim H. So one in each cat race. Anyway there was a head wind down the straight finishing drag so bunch in our race stayed together all the way and pace was often slow as no one willing to do lots of work, including myself  although i did my turn but wasn't going to do more than my share. Getting near to the last lap the speed picked but on the last lap I got some cramp in my upper left thigh in the hilly section and stopped pedalling for a little while and lost my positioning, the cramp seemed to die down so joined in the bunch sprint, managed about 12th according to Adam, who'd watched the race. Anyway 13 laps with no crashes in a 4th cat race at Chertsey!! field of around 50-60.

Wondering if the cramp was caused by lack of high level training and no racing for weeks thanks to Palace wash outs. Anyway I got the chance to try out my new speedplay X2 pedals and sidi shoes, much better than my old system, the speedplays are easy to engage and disengage and lots of float (which I like) and the sidis are really comfortable.

I don't know how adam and Tim did, I watched for a few laps, Adam lurking at the back (as I'd warned him about the head wind) tim tried a break away move but was back in the group next lap, but i think he was just testing the bunch.

Adam completed a fairly modest return to racing this morning. As keiran says i did indeed spend the opening laps 'lurking' at the back. Only the next lap after you left keiran i bridged across to two guys away, which was actually suprisingly easy, i felt good. Satyed away a few laps before the customary reeling in. Lurked a little closer to the front for a while, gave it another go as i knew chris and lisa where watching, but just wasn't going to happen today. The finish straight was incredibly difficult with the headwind.

Then returned to the back of the field where i sat effortlessly until two laps to go. I actually really enjoyed the race today, i felt quite good. Especially sitting at the back, getting sucked along with my heart rate at only 55% of max! 20 laps in all with an average of a shade over 40km/h which was nay bad i thought.

Anyhow, drifted forwards to see what i could do in the finish. Was feeling very nervous throughout the race today as i was incredibly concious of crashing. Anyway, got onto the ast lap and was about 10th wheel. At the hills there were 5 guys clear by about 50m so i gave it a dig and got over too them. I was convinced they were gonna stay away. But the inevitable happed and they died, i was left to lead out the sprint from 400m out. So rather than piss about sitting up and causing a crash, i did the honourable thing and lead out the sprint. Like the sacraficial lamb to the slaughter i put my head down and gave it everything. saw about 7/8 guys go round me within sight of the line, when some idiot barged his way past me almost causing me to crash, luckily i didn't. Anyway, the resulting slowing down probably left me about 15th as i crossed the line.

So i was a little dissapointed not to finish higher, as i felt i rode quite an intelligent race. Only to come unstuck with the luck on the finishing straight. I definately felt capable of a top five today, but nevermind. All i wanted to do whwn i got up was get round without crashing. tick, so im not going to complain. Should be at palace tuesday for only my thrid attempt there this season. Unless the weather defeats us again...

Well done chaps, glad to hear it was incident free.

Hurrah, if only some of the others there did the same. :)

Well yes it does seem a contradiction Paul, but i guess i just ran out of luck in the finish, and so it was all i could do just to put my head down and go knowing full well id be swamped in the finish.

Oh well!

If the Norwood Paragon guy had been in front of you Adam, I would have thought it was a photo of Stu doing his solo time trial last week.

I have had a similar situation at Chertsey except I was away for two laps and then got caught on the line whereas the guy I broke with won the race, now that was annoying.

Cheers

Marek...
