ECCA 12

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

In a moment of unbridled boredom in the office, I decided to cheer myself up by sending off my entry form today

Just as well really. As mentioned in other thread I am not doing this. Not this year. Not ready for it. I am more than willing to volunteer my services as a helper if required.

What a star, admirable dedication Dom.

I have helped in the last couple of 12's being unable to ride and I reckon it's a tougher job than riding - all you have to do is sit down and sort of pedal off in one direction or another, whereas you helpers have to think about where to be at what time, with what food and drink, whose been cut out etc

Don't know of any others yet, but I'm trying to persuade Mrs T (but she is definitely not thrilled - some bribery might work), Joyce maybe, and hopefully Colin and Barbara Davis will hopefully join the happy throng.

I think I've managed to clear this day for helpers duties. Will let you know if I can't, but currently 95% sure I can help out.

I am sorry but I will have to withdraw my helper services for this. This ride was the reason I was going to Scotland on 20th and not before. As my wife has pointed out we could then go before as I am not actually doing the ride, So SWMBO, has been.

SORRY

I've now entered to ride this so can't help either. Sorry! But I don't need any help as Dom from the Bec will be supporting me and Keith.

OK....six days to go and I'm scared!

Twelve HOURS!!!! That's, well, a really long time!

Rich/Paul....what are you guys planning to eat/drink?

I have discovered that unflavoured Torq doesn't make me puke so will be filling my bottles with that, and I am very partial to fig rolls and nutrigrain bars. But I think even I will baulk at 12 hours of sweet cr*p being shovelled down my gullet. My ultra-running friend, Sue, has suggested cold boiled baby potatoes with a little salt, which I have to say sounds quite tasty.

Do you think chocolate milkshake is a good idea? I love chocolate milk. It's wonderfully thirst quenching and easy to drink....but I'm a bit worried it might make me sick...plus it is slower release carbs than Torq...but maybe that's a good thing.....

Oh, and no pressure guys, but you do realise we all have to finish for the team as there's only the 3 of us entered.

I'll e-mail you a copy of my feeding schedule tomorrow.

I suspect Keith will provide better help than Paul "1 bottle is plenty for 12 hours" T or me. Just some brief comments if you're surviving a 12 hour rather than racing it:

Some people manage 12 hours on nothing but carb drink, gels and water but I certainly couldn't. The taste of sugar becomes sickening and it also does a fine job of burning the inside of your mouth completely. Last year I could eat nothing but soup for the week after the event.

Feeding strategy will depend on the weather as well. If it's cold and wet (have you seen the forecast  ) then you will want to have something hot at some point (warm sweet tea in a bottle is heaven when you're soaked). Pack a gas stove and pan for your helpers to heat things up.

Some of the things which I find help:

Warm complan on the early feeds. Goes down a treat when it's chilly.

Ham sandwiches for lunch. Very thin slices of ham on soft white bread just to give you a savoury taste.

Rice pudding. Watered down with milk in a cup. Drink it quickly as you go past the feed and dump cup for helper to pick up.

If it's hot - cold weak shandy. A couple of mouthfuls really chirp you up.

If you want some old wive's remedies ask Joyce and Eddie who will give you plenty of advice. (Ginger beer and milk and various forms of alcohol all feature).

I will try milk for some of my feeds this year as an alternative to the carb drinks. I would stick to skimmed milk as the carb/protein/fat balance is much better.

Anyway good luck. Hope to see you on Sunday but I had a good attempt at breaking my finger this morning and am just hoping it will swell up a bit more and put me off my bike for a week :)

Actually I've just realised that its gonna take you 12 hours however fast you ride so you may as well go steady and enjoy it ;-)

Now that's my kind of feeding strategy.

Whiskey early on to help wake up and keep the cold at bay - I'd recommend a good peaty malt, Lagavulin or similar.

A mixture of Guiness and real ales should help keep the calorie intake up.

Return to whiskey if it rains or gets cold, alternate with a good red for insulation.

Cold lager, or white wine to refresh.

Cider for the sugar intake.

Actually you may need to do it on a trike for the obvious balance reasons.

Good luck all three of you.
