Ugh! And to think I taped over a superb episode of The Shield to catch last night's highlights of the stage on ITV4.

Still, should be able to pick up some discounted Astana replica kit in GB's.

Tuesdy 24th July 2007 - Tour de France - UPDATE 17.00

sh1t. I don't believe it. A couple of hours ago we got the news here that Vino was caught positive for
blood doping after the Time Trial he won on friday. And that him and his team have quit the Tour
and gone home.
Its sort of knocked me for six, and stressed me out.
Up until now I think I have always avoided the darker side of cycling. But these people are possibly
messing up me and my familys livelyhoods, and that makes me angry.
So, from looking forward to tomorrows stage, everybody is now in a state of shock.
I feel sorry for Andreas Kloeden

I wasn't quite sure about him. When I've seen him interviewed etc he seems a nice guy, but T-Mobile said that they offered the same contract to him that Astana did, yet he chose to move. All at exactly the same time that they introduced their new internal doping controls. Just seemed a bit fishy as he wasn't exactly best mates with Vino when they were at T-Mobile together.
In an interview with Cyclingnews earlier this month, Kazakh Ambassador Erlan Idrissov said the significance of a Kazakh winner on the world stage cannot be underestimated. For the youngsters of Kazakhstan - a country where a rumoured 250,000 of the 15 million population are drug addicts - the example of Vino and Andrey Kashechkin is designed to be inspirational. "Many boys and girls will jump into cycling, they will stay away from drugs and bars and they will have something to devote their lives to," Idrissov said in the interview. "The message will be that they can also achieve success like this.
Interestingly if riders are now using homologous rather than autologous doping that both Vinos dad and Levi's dad have been following the route of the tour. I bet they are as white as a sheet now!

I'd forgotten what the point of blood transfusing was so just reminded myself from this neat summary (which though from 2005 is presumably still accurate). Thought I'd post it in case others wanted to remind themselves.
In a similar vein is autologous blood doping, which involves removing blood a few weeks prior to competition then replacing the red cells just before the event. The body has regenerated the blood in that time, so the additional red cells provide extra haemoglobin and therefore a greater oxygen capacity.

A more risky procedure is homologous blood doping, which involves injecting a different person's (with compatible blood) red blood cells, giving the same boost. Although it eliminates the inconvenience of an athlete to withdraw/regenerate their own blood in the first place, it carries with it a greater risk of contracting blood borne diseases such as HIV/AIDS, as well as becoming sensitised to minor blood group proteins, so that transfused blood may be rejected further down the line.

I wonder if it was a deliberate use of the word "vein" :)

Likewise, I am astounded the Vino resorted to using someone else's blood!
