Turbo trainers

Quick one... what's the current opinion on turbos - brands / models / discount outlets?

.. I just haven't had time to get out much or even read C+ recently. They might have done a review but I expect it's a bit of a winter thing for normal people.

mmm there's probably more questions than answers to this one. Your choice may be easier once you've decided the following
Have you used a TT before? Are you planning to be competitive or is just for fitness? How much do you want to spend? Is it important that its quiet? etc etc. Personally there's only one I'd go for and it would be a Kurt Kinetic

Loathsome machines. I only keep mine in case the winter weather is really foul. I find it monumentally tedious.

You can borrow mine if you want to give it a go. That way if you find that you hate it as much as me you won't waste your money on a flashy one. No point having all the bells and whistles on something that'll spend all its time folded up in the garage.

As toks says, the Kurt Kinetic is regarded as the best out there.
You can even upgrade it and get a power meter attached at a fraction of the cost of at PT or SRM.

I only went on the damn thing once and shredded a £25 tyre - wondered what the weird burning rubber smell was

Ok so the received wisdom is:
a) they're horrible and boring
b) the kurt kinetic is great if you must

I'm going to get one on the basis that "I must" .... at least while my daughter is still little.

So - thank you - really apprecaited.

Last question - is there a UK outlet?

Thanks again

Andrew kindly let me his one earlier this year. I ended my first session to find that I'd sprayed our expensive curtains with flecks of tyre-rubber

George can have one- tho it will need a flywheel like a steam roller.

On the other hand i find turbo sessions really good, get a few training DVD's and or get a thumpin' music selection on yer ipod.

There are plenty of training routines availiable on the web- just mix it up a little.
You can get a great structured workout on a turbo- no stopping- no free wheeling- no junctions or traffic- plenty of sweat tho, get a fan.
