Bank Holiday Monday 27th August - Hilly 50

Postby Andrew G » Sat Jul 28, 2007 2:33 pm

Following discussion with Monty and as per today's announcements at the cafe the Hilly 50 will now be on Bank Holiday Monday, 27th August. 9am at CSS to leave no later than 9:10am

Details are below from my previous post, and It would be nice to see plenty of people out for a spin up some hills, particularly if you are new to this route and normally stick to the standard CR.

It's a bit tricky to give a guide to the ride time as it will depend on who's there, but I would think the all comers I'll lead will be back at the top of Box Hill for the cafe stop at about 12:30pm, maybe a little bit later.

Hello again folks,

Following my abortive attempt to get as many people on a hill at one time as possible I’m having another go.

Sorry to Graham for piggy-backing his idea last time but quite a few of us do this ride occasionally for a challenge, training, something different.

I would like to open this up to everyone to say that if you fancy doing something different, or fancy a new challenge, there will be an alternate CR which will do the CTC Hilly 50km loop on 27th August.

This starts and finishes at Box Hill and takes in plenty of hills for 35 miles (50km), so add on to and from Box Hill for your total distance. This is a challenging ride but a very good one. I think it would make a good alternative for any 17s riders, and also any 15s who are thinking of a step up or like a challenge.

I am happy to lead an all comers group.
I will wait at the top of each hill to regroup and makes sure everyone gets back to Box Hill for a slab of flapjack/treacle tart or whatever takes your fancy.

I would guess that there will be at least one other group with the fast guys in who want to have a blast round, but think it would work well as a more social ride for most where we stuck together, similar to John C’s C-B-C. (PM me if you have any questions about the ride).

If you haven't done this ride before, it is quite a tough route and the cafe stop will not be until we get back to Box Hill (50 miles-ish) so make sure you have a couple of bottles and some food (banana, energy bar or two) to nibble on the way round.

I hope to make the CR this Saturday and Monty has said that he will announce it at the café.

I'll print off some route cards so that people can go at their own pace, or form different speed groups if they want. I know the route as do others in the club so the route cards will be more for back up, or if you want to do your own pace.

All are welcome, so find out what the small gears on your bike are for.

If you are up for this please can you let me know either by posting here, PM-ing me, or bending my ear on a CR so I can have a rough idea about what route cards may be needed. No commitment though just turn up and do it, I'll make sure I have a few on me.

Cheers,

Andrew.

P.S. As before it will be weather dependant as some of the descents are best not done in the wet, so if it's raining on the morning (or very heavy the day before) I won't do it, but I’m keeping everything crossed that there is some sun up there due out anytime soon.

Adrian - you've been there, done that anyway although it would make a nice recovery ride  .

Sean - worry not I can show you around it some other time, good prep for your next Italian trip  .

Hilly 50

Postby Kasper » Fri Aug 17, 2007 3:50 pm

Definately interested in doing this one Andrew, as would be nice change from club run and good prep for Ride of the Falling Leaves which covers similarly hilly route but over the border in Kent.

Only if but is that i was thinking of working the bank holiday for the money.

i'll wait and see what the numbers are like going as I'm presuming it'll get easier the bigger the group we have going up the hills??? :?:

Numbers shouldn't be an issue, although the more the merrier.

Depending who turns up there may be more than one group, so those hardened grimpeurs can charge off and have a good old ding-ding up each hill, while I'll take the all-comers (each hill at your own pace and re-group at the top) everybody welcome group.

Or were you hoping for a good turnout so you get plenty of seatposts to hitch a lift on  .

Ah, takes me back to happier times... Up there with Cruijff, Vermeer and van der Valk in the pantheon of that fine nation's cultural exports.

And I can reveal that the lyrics are even better than in the better-known (in England) English version:

# Is it long ago, is it long ago, that my heart called to you with its dinge-dong... #

There's only one word for that - sheer poetry

Final reminder and bounce.

A few asked today at the cafe on a couple of details.

The all comers group will regroup at the top of the hills and I will wait for the last rider.

If new to this sort of ride it is approx 50 miles before cafe stop at the top of Box Hill so make sure you have a couple of bottles, some energy drink, and some food.

If you want a guide to the type of terrain then the last hill is Box Hill and that is one of the easiest out of about 10. It's tough but very doable and we won't be racing round, this is intended to be a challenging but enjoyable ride.

9 am at CSS Monday

Cheers,

Andrew.

Andrew, I will join you and your group.

Will have to blow the cobwebs off the bike as its not been out for a while!

Also better blow the cobwebs off the legs as they havent seen a hill since the Dragon ride way back in June!

Never the less looking forward to it - see you at CSS tomorrow.
