Thanks to Mark for organising this, a very enjoyable day. Hope you're back in one piece soon.

A real shame that the turnout was so low but I know a lot of people either don't like track, find the idea of a bike with no brakes alarming, or don't want to miss the CR to do one of the introductory sessions.

I would strongly recommend going to one of these sessions though as they are good fun, very easy and friendly, and riding on the herne hill track is great fun.

Events:
500 metre handicap sprint
Flying 200 metre sprint
Scratch Sprint
4,000 metre Pursuit
5 Mile Scratch race.

I discovered that without much rest between events the legs start to get alarmingly heavy quite quickly.

Had fun in the sprints winning the handicap, 2nd in the flying 200, and 3rd in the scratch sprint. With hindsight I'd fit a slightly bigger gear for these next time as I couldn't spin quick enough at times.

Pursuit and Scratch race were bloody hard work. Not sure where I finished in these but didn't trouble the podium :D . Pursuit was worse as my legs still felt a bit heavy. Legs felt better by the scratch race and I rode stronger in this, way down the field though (we all rode together - us, Bec and DeLaunne - so a good pack on the track). Paul T looked feeble as usual  and rode a blinder in the scratch race, when Keith Coffey was ripping the field to shreds.

Like I said a great day and more of you really should have a go on the track, it's not as scary as you probably think, and there is a huge variety of events so something to suit everyone.

Cheers,

Andrew.

I think there would be more takers if there were more track events during the winter

One of the best days riding I ever had with ACC was at Calshot track in the deep mid-winter about two years ago

Do these still happen? - I think Newport does them as well. Highly reccomended

I think Calshot did them last year, never got to one myself but maybe it would be worth looking it to how much it would cost for an ACC Calshot day when the weather's bleak.

You can race all winter at Calshot, but with no heating there it's almost as cold inside as outside, plus there's a 2 hour drive each way.

Really good afternoon down the track. I am cr*p at sprinting so did appallingly in the first few events. But then got out the pointy helmet and tri-bars for the pursuit to take 3rd place....although we'll never know what might've been if AJ hadn't been weaving up and down the track to stop me passing him (Commissaire!!!!) :?

5 mile scratch....ewwww. Hate riding in a bunch. Rode round in a small group, got a bit confused about when we were finishing. Came last. AJ looked pleased. Idle wheel sucking.....

Don't care though. Pursuit had made up for it 'cos I beat PVT.

Was a pretty good day for all with good performances all round. PVT narrowly pipped Chris Colford in the sprint. Andrew Green took the h'cap. Chris won the pursuit with Owen in 2nd and PVT lapped the field in the scratch for a well-earned win.

Paul and I then had a spin on his track tandem to try to take the 500m record set by Paul and Chris a few years back. We failed miserably...but next time will try it BEFORE the scratch not after!

If you've not tried track yet it's well worth having a go. Great fun. V sociable.

[quote]Thanks to Mark for organising the club track championships.

It would appear that only a handful of us had an "all day pass" (although Mark M's feeble excuse that he was locked out, so he came to watch us whilst waiting to get in!!).

Good to see AJ on a track bike, but he was somewhat bewildered in the pursuit, asking every time round where there was a wheel for him to follow

With only 4 of us (initially), myslef, Tamar, Andrew and Chris Colford, we decided to have a straight sprint final, after doing individual 200m times to warm up - Mark has the times, but I think Chris C was fastest.

In the final, Chris led out in the backstraight, I was behind Andrew, but he was riding high up the track, so passed on the inside, and into the homestraight, waited til 80m to go, and jumped hard, got ahead of Chris, but he came back at me with 20m to go, and with a big lunge for the line, just edged my wheel in front. This is the first time I have won the club track sprint champs, after 34 years of trying

Next up was a 9 lap pursuit, and after seeing everyone dying in the last few laps, took a steady (very) approach to the first 6 laps, then speeded up with a rapid finish. The theory was good, but my judgement was a bit off, finishing slower than Tamar (the ringer with tri bars ) who then made the whole stadium aware of the fact.

Then to the 5 mile. With each of the clubs having a handful of riders, everyone went together. Keith Coffey was the first to show his hand with the sniff of some money in the form of a prime, the pace went up by 10mph. I followed him closely to the line, then they slowed up, and a select group of around 10 riders had formed. When I swung off after a turn on the front, I was amazed to see 2 other Agreeables in the group - was that Andrew? NO it was Owen on his lovely Ridley track bike. Steady few laps, then more money on offer, so Keith was off again. This time the elastic broke and both Chris and Owen were distanced. I stayed up front doing my turns, then another prime. Dug deep and hung on, just, then spotted Chris ahead, and sped past at warp speed behind KC. 3 laps to go and couldn't hold on any longer, but had done enough to regain the 5 mile trophy.

After a quick rest, got up on the track on my tandem with Tamar, to set up a 500m track time. Sped round for a few steady laps, feeling a bit strange, especially on the banking as the longer track looks weird when you look down at the back wheel on the bend as it somehow doesn't seem to be following the front Then 2 more laps and we would have a flat out 500m. At speed it is difficult to keep steady and tight on the bottom of the track, but luckily my "stoker" is very smooth and kept all in check. We timed in at 36.25 which was a couple of seconds slower than Chris Colford and I did in 2004, but for a "mixed" pairing. That was real pain and legs and lungs were hurting even on the way home after that effort.

Nonetheless a great day out in the sunshine, with great company, shame a few more faces weren't there - next year

Paul, I can assure you that the tandem felt bloody strange from the back too. V hard to feel how much to lean as the frame felt like it was attempting to go in two directions at once. Don't think I'd fancy trying the tandem on the Wall of Death aka Calshot. V glad you waited until we'd finished before you let me in on the fact you were struggling to keep it under control.

Hadn't realised you'd been after the sprint title for so long. Well done!

Your tandem is longer than the straight at Calshot - you'd be entering the bend and Paul would be half way round it :-)

You'd need a special articulated frame - like those bendy buses in london

Bendy buses - you mean death traps Huw, they are bloody dangerous if you're on a bike and with a hunderd metres of one.

I'm not scared it's just the drivers tend to drive them as if they are normal buses and don't factor in the length/bend/angles, not sure what extra training they do for them but it needs to be more. By and large HGV drivers are superb and I never get a problem as their jusgement is superb.
