Wheel building, anyone?

Postby Mike I » Wed Sep 05, 2007 8:38 pm

In my latest attempt to out-retro Mr Green, I have just secured a nice pair of 27 inch 1960s Nisi tubular rims on e-Bay. Now, these I think really were hand-crafted in a forge on a Tuscan hillside.

My plan is to marry them up with my high flange Gran Sport hubs. The result will be carbon-free and not white, but still quite bling in its own way. And very Italian.

Trouble is, I've never built a wheel and the wheelbuilder round the corner closed a few years ago.

Any recommendations? Or volunteers? Suitable remuneration available of course - which is likely to be more than a pint but less than what GBs would charge.

I couldn't come close to you for retro when you bring out the big guns, the beautiful curly number. :D

If you find someone who'll let you watch and learn the tricks of the trade then I'd be happy to chip in to learn some of the magic myself, need to be able to keep my nice Ambrosio handbuilts in good nick.

I can do wheel building.

How about at the next clubroom evening?

First lesson will cost a cup of tea and some cake.

I can build wheels as well, but will be at the David Lean watching the Obree film on the 12th.

The contents of my shed can out-retro anyone.....just unearrthed some Benelux rear mechs, Cyclo brakes, and a 5 speed rear block :!: :!:

Before your time Sean.

They were an early type of rear derailleur which had a spring forcing the mech towards the wheel i.e. largest sprocket and then a chain arrangement through the centre of the spring, a bit like Sturmey Archer hub gear, that then pulled the mech towards the frame when the lever was turned i.e. reverse of what we have now.

Slight problem with next week, Possums, as my aunt from Australia is coming to stay. This was not completely out of the blue, but I didn't know when or for how long until yesterday.

I could come along for a wheel-building lesson (and provide raw materials) on the 26th though.

Bring your Aunt along. Wheelbuilding skills could be handy if she breaks a spoke in the outback.

Sure I can't outdo you, Paul (and Mike). But I have nearly got my end-1960's Condor rolling again. Got a good-condition Campag Nuovo Gran Sport on Ebay for 6 quid. Down-tube levers are orig though chainset is a modern Veloce. Wheels are Ambrosio rims-Campag hubs. Thought I'd never get tubulars for them (Vittoria sent me a polite email to say they backed out of making 27-1/4 inch size three years ag0 and Clement is no more. But Guy at Pearsons came up trumps with two new Clement Grintas. I really ought to seek out an old Brooks B17 Narrow saddle, but will make do with a modern Fizik Arione. The rider is original, with 7 decades behind him. :)

Guess this all means nowt to any Agreeables under 50 - but nostalgia never went away, it just got older ...

[quote="Seanieh_The PengeAvenger©"]Is it the 12th then?

Yup, I can do the 12th, but not the 26th (cos I'll be in north Italy)

How about part 2 in October?
