A bad day in the saddle

Postby mrP(Boonen)VT » Thu Sep 06, 2007 8:27 am

Riding home from work last night was an absolute disaster:

1. Heading towards Sutton at about 35mph (behand a transit) hit a small bump and the panier bag flew off, bounced along the road and was nearly run over. Discovered the securing clip had snapped.

2. From Pearsons, a plastic carrier bag got caught up in the rear mech. Could not move pedals forwards or back. Dismantled rear mech at roadside to remove offending bag. Reassembled said mech, missing a washer....spotted it on the path and went through the whole process again

3. Just got to Croydon and "twang" a spoke broke in the rear wheel. Released the brake, but was still rubbing, but managed to get home - extra resistance training :!:

All this in 15 miles :!:

I stopped to adjust my front brake blocks.

Yeah Paul, i think that just about qualifies for a bad day in the saddle. One day someone at one of these modern university's will plough a whole lot of money into researching "that annoying plastic bag that blows around in the road up ahead and eventually plants itself slap bang on your chain or rear mech" :x

I couldn't believe how it jammed everything solid - just a simple plastic bag (a BP one). Thought I could just pull it out, but even digging at it with a screwdriver didn't get anywhere.

I'm no student but give us £500k and I'll start some research for you. judging from whenever I here the cost of these things on the Today programme that sounds like a very resonable fee.

Here's my Ph.D. thesis;

Charge a quid for a bag at the shop, and people would be less keen on chucking them away.

For me, this sums up the evil of panniers in particular and touring in general :-)

I got in to work today and realised I had left my laptop at work

I was too embarrassed to admit what I had done so said to my colleagues: "I'm just off to a meeting on the 3rd floor"...

And then I nipped downstairs to the changing room, got back into my gimp outfit, and raced home and back in a (quite good for me) 32 minutes.

When I got back I had to sit down in the changing rooms for 10 minutes or so to wait for my face to go back from bright red to normal (so as not to arouse suspicion about what I'd been doing in the meeting!) :D

So what did you need to race home for?

[quote]Was that with campag?

Fortunately it was, as the disassembly and reassembly was really easy, unlike some other unmentionable that would probably have to be thrown away :P

We demand an answer ;-)

Sorry, I should have made it clear! I didn't realise I'd left it at work until I got home and couldn't find it.
