Because of the tube strike walked up from Charing cross to Warren street for the 18 bus this morning and on the way stopped off for an expresso and Campagnola panini in Italia Cafe Uno, very tasty! Sundried tomatoes, artichoke , aubergine and salad. Not sure if they do a Shimano one though!

they used to do a Shimano one.
It was a Japanese raw fish/sushi filling with wasabi dessing.
However it didn't sell very well.
Apparently the cables sticking out of the sides put people off.

And the eastern european tractor parts don't put people off the Campagnolo one? strange.

Paul, I gather it's Italia Uno in Charlotte Street? That place is my second home!!

I won't get drawn into the ongoing Campag/Shimano squabble....

Why did Mavic give up with components? Bar their brakes of course. But surely they have enough power as a company to invest in groupsets and the like?

Dunno, but some big teams used to use Mavic SSC groupsets, including Sean Kelly for most of his career.
AFAIK their stuff was well thought of in the pro peleton, especially their friction shift downtube gear levers.

Mavic must have realised that by producing groupsets in a market with three or four players, you're limiting yourself to a third or quarter of the potential market share. But by concentrating on making wheels and offering compatability with all groupset manufacturers you open up your business to the whole market.

[quote="marco"]when i first joined the club there was a bit more choice with groupsets - Suntour had a very good groupset called SuperbePro]

My Dave ran a Suntour Superbe rear mech at one time. It was a terrific bit of kit. Easily as good as Campag, but even lighter.

Hmm, the days of only 2 groupset players may be fading.

Obviously there's SRAM, but there is a rumour another well known component manufacturer will come out with a groupset next year. I don't know who. My money would be on Specialized or perhaps Trek/Bontrager though.

There are at least 2 Far East manufacturers with complete groupsets at trade shows (think one is called Microshift?) so all it takes is a bit of rebranding...
