Tour of Britain Support Races

Postby mrP(Boonen)VT » Wed Aug 22, 2007 1:53 pm

Tour of Britain Stage 1 Support Races.

Entries so far are very low for these events which are now only 18 days away.

The opening stage of This Years Tour of Britain will be at Crystal Palace on Sunday 9th September. In a stage of firsts, the 9th September will represent the first time The Tour of Britain has begun with a prologue time trial as well as being the first time the race has visited this historic site in South London.

With its famous stadium, synonymous with some of the great moments in British athletics, Crystal Palace has been the site of sporting greatness throughout history, however it is not the running track, but the former motor racing circuit at Crystal Palace which will form the basis of the Prologue time trial with each of the 96 setting of at one minute intervals to see who can set the best time over the course and secure the first yellow jersey of the race.

Here's your chance to race on the very same circuit that the Tour of Britain riders will be racing on.

Thanks to the generosity of Transport for London, Bob Chicken, The London Borough of Bromley, and the London Development Agency, the Surrey League have been asked to run 5 support races before the Tour of Britain starts in Crystal Palace Park.

I will be doing the women's race. I've made a few abortive attempts to do the Tuesday night Palace races, so really want to make this one.

It's gonna be interesting as the course will follow the bike course of the Crystal Palace triathlon - so it'll mean a bigger loop - about 1.5miles, less tight corners, a long descent past the Jubilee stand. Then a steep hill before reaching the incline that they do on Tuesday nights.

I think hill reps beckon !!

'Entry forms are available from http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/web/si ... _forms.asp

Day licences are only available for the Youth A, Junior and Women's events.'

Thats what I've just been told, except what is meant by Youth 'A'?

Mo,
Age categories are determined by your year of birth - see chart below, and will be allocated to yo by British Cycling on your racing licence. There is also a aystem for the better ability riders to get upgraded and ride against older riders.

I have also quoted the gear restrictions which relate to your age category. It is important that your bike meets these requirements. Post here if you want more info.

[quote]5 AGE CATEGORIES
Licences, which shall be valid for all disciplines, shall be issued as follows:
5.1 Youth
5.1.1 Youth E - Under 8 - Until 31 December in year of 8th birthday.
5.1.2 Youth D - Under 10 – From 1 January in year of 9th Birthday until 31 December in year of 10th birthday.
5.1.3 Youth C - Under 12 -. From 1 January in year of 11th Birthday until 31 December in year of 12th birthday
5.1.4 Youth B - Under 14 - From 1 January in year of 13th Birthday until 31 December in year of 14th birthday
5.1.5 Youth A - Under 16 - From 1 January in year of 15th Birthday until 31 December in year of 16th birthday. On reaching his 16th birthday a rider may apply for a Junior competition licence in order to be permitted to compete on the open road. On taking up this option he may no longer compete as a Youth rider.
Note:
Whilst the above categories may be grouped together in events, promoters should be conscious of the range of abilities of riders within the youth categories. This can be helped by running events for different age groups, different sizes, similar ability, by forming suitable handicaps or by offering separate awards for different groups. Girls are permitted to compete in events open to, and for awards available to, those Boys of the next youngest age category at the discretion of the chief Commissaire. In such situations, such Girls must restrict themselves to that gear restriction as per the Boy’s category. Two or three shorter races on an omnium basis may also be more suitable than one longer race.

[quote]Gear Restrictions
3.3.1 In all road events (other than events promoted in accordance with T.R. 7.12) juniors shall be restricted to a maximum gear such that the distance covered per crank revolution is 7.93 metres. The gear restriction shall not apply to seniors.
Youth category riders shall be restricted in all events to maximum gears as shown in the following table
YOUTH CATEGORY GEAR RESTRICTIONS
CATEGORY ROADRACING TRACKRACING ROLLERRACING
YOUTH A 6.91 metres 6.91 metres 7.93 metres
YOUTH B 6.45 metres 6.45 metres 7.40 metres
YOUTH C 6.05 metres 6.05 metres 6.94 metres
YOUTH D 5.40 metres for all events.
YOUTH E 5.10 metres for all events.
Note: These gear restrictions apply to riders in all events irrespective of the gearing used by riders from other categories in the same event.

I have sent my entry in for the cat 3 race that starts at 10:40 so will hope to see some of you there. Is anyone else in this race?

I will probably not be able to stick around afterwards to watch the real thing from 3pm as I have DIY to do  Does anyone know if this will be covered on TV (freeview)?
