In my latest attempt to out-retro Mr Green, I have just secured a nice pair of 27 inch 1960s Nisi tubular rims on e-Bay. Now, these I think really were hand-crafted in a forge on a Tuscan hillside.

My plan is to marry them up with my high flange Gran Sport hubs. The result will be carbon-free and not white, but still quite bling in its own way. And very Italian.

Trouble is, I've never built a wheel and the wheelbuilder round the corner closed a few years ago.

Any recommendations? Or volunteers? Suitable remuneration available of course - which is likely to be more than a pint but less than what GBs would charge.

I couldn't come close to you for retro when you bring out the big guns, the beautiful curly number.

If you find someone who'll let you watch and learn the tricks of the trade then I'd be happy to chip in to learn some of the magic myself, need to be able to keep my nice Ambrosio handbuilts in good nick.

Let me know how it goes, I'd be happy to pay for your time on another occaision Grahame if you don't mind as I could do with a few pointers on truing (sp?), know the theory, not so hot on the practical.

I can build wheels as well, but will be at the David Lean watching the Obree film on the 12th.

The contents of my shed can out-retro anyone.....just unearrthed some Benelux rear mechs, Cyclo brakes, and a 5 speed rear block :!:

Before your time Sean.

They were an early type of rear derailleur which had a spring forcing the mech towards the wheel i.e. largest sprocket and then a chain arrangement through the centre of the spring, a bit like Sturmey Archer hub gear, that then pulled the mech towards the frame when the lever was turned i.e. reverse of what we have now.

Slight problem with next week, Possums, as my aunt from Australia is coming to stay. This was not completely out of the blue, but I didn't know when or for how long until yesterday.

I could come along for a wheel-building lesson (and provide raw materials) on the 26th though.
