CX London league 16 September 2007

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Anyone doing this or know anything about temple school, Strood course? What's the format for this kind of thing? Is it done on laps or time? Can I use a MTB?

Temple School is a great course (for a cyclo cross bike!!). It is fast fairly flat, non-technical with some short sharp climbs. Based on the school, it uses their playing fields and makes for a good fast race.

Have a go - I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

BTW You need to have a BC licence or pay a couple of squiddly's extra for a day licence.

I raced on this course last year.

It's largely untechnical. The course used went mainly around the school playing field, with parts of it going around tarmacced sections behind the school outbuildings. There were a couple of short steep climbs and drops, and two sections that went through scrubland and zigzagged through trees.

In the dry this is not technical, however the day I did it there'd been alot of rain and the muddy sections through the trees became slippery and unrideable - even the good riders found it easier to dismount and run with the bikes.

We're unlikely to have this problem on Sunday. It's worth noting that courses vary from race to race (even when held at the same venue) so Sunday may be a little different to what I've just described. In fact it's likely to be a shorter lap as the race I did was the SE Champs which normally have long laps.

Mountain bike is fine - many people use them. Entry is on the day. It's worth getting your BC licence if you're going to do a few of these. (Licence is half price now.) The race finishes when the winner has done an hour. 'Cross is loads of fun compared with other types of bike racing - no frills, no hang-ups, a good ambiance both during and after the race, and a great way to keep fit during the autumn/winter months.

I think Aodan is doing it. If I don't do the women's race at Warwick I'll definitely be at Strood, so maybe see you there.
