ACC Road Race - Saturday October 27th 2007

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Just six weeks to go now so don't start slacking off yet guys. The most competitive club members only event takes place on Saturday October 27th :D

Don't worry Sean they'll all be in a 2/3 race if Toks uses the draft format he mentioned earlier. :D

How do you enter and how much does it cost without a bc license? Also, is there really going to be a race in central Croydon? does anyone have any details.

You bring your bike, ACC kit and a Helmet and turn up at Hillingdon between 1pm and 1.45pm[quote]and how much does it cost without a bc license?
Approximately 0.00p[quote]Also, is there really going to be a race in central Croydon?
I don't know about that. Perhaps that was just a tongue in cheek suggestion by Sylv.[quote]does anyone have any details
See my post - Sept 12th 7.52pm. In terms of travel on the day I'm sure they'll be riders travelling up from CSS. In fact someone like that awfully nice Andrew Green chap might even post a map or possibly give a journey time.

Its hard to say. Hillingdon's quite fast and flat. If its not too windy perhaps between 22-24mph with a big bunch even quicker. Basically Mo if you can average 20mph by yourself for 30 minutes you're good to go.[quote]So is it how far u cn go in 35 mins with a minimum of 5 laps?
Each lap is approximately a mile, - you're at school you do the Maths

No that was in the Surrey League handbook. But neither me or Paul have seen any confirmation or info since. Was it on the same day as Acc race then?

Mo - You don't need to average 20mph on your own for 30mins to be of a sufficient standard to road-race. I have never averaged 20mph on a solo training ride. If you are averaging anything like 17mph over varied terrain (including the odd hill) on your own for 25 miles or so you're pretty close to the standard you need to be to road race. I'd try riding with some of the quicker groups on the clubrun and see how you get on. If you can stick with them, you're good enough to give it a try.

My guess would be that the 4th cats and novices will probably average around 21-22mph on the day. It is usually the variation in pace that sorts out the better riders from the weaker ones - although not always in the lower category races.

Finally guys - novices road-racers especially - please remember it is only a club event! Don't, however, try to emulate the mass sprint finish to some of the Tour De France stages. Crashes are not an everyday part of cycling and winning the event will not make any appreciable difference to the rest of your life. If you manage to get a good result then great! If you are desperate to win at all costs, please stay at home for eveyone else's sake!

Indeed, but on flat headwind free terrain I think you'd agree Tony that its a fairly good marker. On the BCF website it was posted up as a good judge of intensity and speed for a 4th cat race a few years ago. [quote]I have never averaged 20mph on a solo training ride.
Yeah possibly cause you don't do rides on flat terrain. But I remember at a 10mile TT (Holmwood course) a few years back with you being slightly below par and you easily cruised under evens[quote]If you are averaging anything like 17mph over varied terrain (including the odd hill) on your own for 25 miles or so you're pretty close to the standard you need to be to road race.
Probably translates as 20mph on flat for half an hour which essentially describes the up and coming ACC race - groups, speed changes, and duration not with standing[quote]I'd try riding with some of the quicker groups on the clubrun and see how you get on. If you can stick with them, you're good enough to give it a try.
No need. The 17s will do the job just fine as long as you're tongue isn't dragging along the floor and you can ride at the front for a bit :D

Never been to Hillingdon Toks, don't know where it is :) . Was banking on a group going over (ride or train and ride) as with Eastway last year.

Sean, be great if you can make it. You did a 3/4 race at CP in May and the pace won't be anything like that in a club 4ths only.
