ACC Road Race - Saturday October 27th 2007

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

a guy in butlers taught me ten ways how to avoid it/fool the race organisers, so it doesn't matter, it just means a lazy teenager has to get off his backside

Toks - If you wish to continue the conversation privately - I'm happy to do so. The general point that I will re-iterate (as it is important) is below:

I want to ensure that nobody is put off from racing (or even riding with any club) by looking at average riding speeds without proper context or without a context that a novice rider can relate to.

As I said in an earlier post - this is exactly what happened to me for years! I rode around on my own or occasionally with friends for years on the premise that 20mph was the cut-off for being a club / racing cyclist. No matter how hard I hammered round even quite short routes I could not average 20mph. My best cycling days were already behind me when I actually took the plunge, joined a club and realised I had been more than good enough for the preceding 10-years!

Where we clearly do agreed is that a 'respectable' showing in the intermediate or quicker groups on the clubrun is sufficient to ride with the 4ths and novices in the ACC promotion. Riders of this standard should definitely ride if they want to.

I was still riding with the 17s/18s last year when I did the ACC race. Got dropped from the lead 4 after 20mins but had a great time. Hung on long enough for the 1st prime and won a couple of beers :D .

Hey I agree. I'll stop now cause I'm probably getting a bit annoying. I hope I haven't offended anyone cause that hasn't been my attention. Perhaps I need to remember this is an Ageeable forum :D

They've got brand new facilities now at Hillingdon - gone are the old signing-in hut and the makeshift loos.

You can now use the toilets and changing room facilities at the Goals sports building. They are brand new complete with showers and lockers (20p for the token). There's even a bar.
At the Wednesday evening races the organiser used a small meeting room for the signing-in area. You will probably need to arrange with them for use of it.

A couple of things to note - you can't use cycling shoes inside the building. Also people just park their bikes up against a wall outside the building. Although I've not seen anything untoward go on, some people have said you need to take more care over the security of your bike as there's alot more comings and goings in that area now.

Not sure what the story is with the bar, but you can always organise it so there's somewhere to go for a post-race celebration/commiseration. :D

I might need a lift as Dad is away that weekend and Mum has to sort out my two younger siblings.

Mo, post a reminder a week before the race and we'll try and arrange a lift or something if nothing materialises before then :D [quote="Richv"]Excellent, will dust off my 4th cat licence
Mmm if you really are gonna race Mr "27-29mph-av-ten-mile-TT" man then I know you'll do the right thing on the day  :D
