What new bike choice?

Postby Hal » Tue Sep 18, 2007 8:35 pm

I have decided to upgrade the bike this year, but have a bit of a choice. Here are the three main contenders

1. The great value Planet X £999 with Ultegra build. I can buy it through the bike2work scheme and pay less than £600 leaving mountains of cash to upgrade things like the wheels. Does anyone have experiance of this frame? Apples?

2. The standard road bike in an end of season deal £1500. Scott CR1 pro, Look 555, Specialized Tarmac …etc. All around road bikes with good quality carbon frames and Ultegra Build.

3. The life long Sunday Bicycles Silk Road £2000. Ti frame and Ultegra / Easton build should last forever but is it worth the expenditure?

Any comments welcome, I’m riding a Alloy/Carbon Litespeed vela with 105 build at the moment. Club runs, sportives and some cat 3 racing.

Hal, I believe you are quite tall and therefore I have heard that the Specialized is a good frame for the taller rider. Happy shopping.

Cheers

Love Ti and the Sunday bikes look good, they'll also look good years down the line. Can't remember which, but one of the Premier Calendar teams uses them and I've read reprts that they are happy. Ti would be comfy on the spotives as well. Just depends if the budget can stretch to it.

Look lugged carbon frames are very nice, and the Planet-X looks a difficult deal to beat, and with the bike to work deal an absolute steal.

Hal,

The time edges are pretty good and can be built up for less than 2K....

Saw this on ebay. It might go quite cheap. Its one up from mine with better forks and apparently slightly racier !!

Hi Hal,

I would definately recommend the Planet X , dont think you can beat it for value.
Its nice and light, well balanced and handles well

Then as you say loads of upgrade potential.

I upgraded to fulcrum 3 wheels .

You're probably taller than me but are welcome to take it for a spin if you like.
