Bike Building...

Postby -Adam- » Wed Oct 03, 2007 12:37 am

So...

If when i get this lovely Giant from kevin, i am going to need to build the rest of the bike around it. I have wheels. But nothing else. Obviously handle bars and a saddle would be nice.

So two questions, components? And don't think ill entertain the idea of hanging some italian cogs and mechanisms on it, its not going to happen

And secondly, would anyone be willing to teach me to build it? Bearing in mind I have very few tools, and very little knowledge. But ill listen attentively and give you beer. Any takers?!

Guru Paul, you spring to mind but im sure there are many who know the arts...

Thanks,

Adam

Adam,

Do you need a crank?

I've got a brand new unused FSA Gossamer 172.5mm crank suitable for 9sp/10speed for sale which was removed from my Specialized 08 bike last month. It uses outboard bearings.

Retail price is around the £160 mark. Looking for to sell for £80.

PM if your interested.

Adam, for all the bits you need get a big cup of tea and spend a few hours wading through t'net.

I've found you can get some very good deals from loads of different shops and off ebay (also often shops selling), particularly at this time of year. They all want to get rid of stock from a couple of years old to make way for the new. Don't expect a matched groupset but you can put together a reasonable spec quite cheaply.

9 speed may be the way to go as they'll all want shot of 9 speed stuff and you could get some silly deals on the expensive bits (sti levers) now that all the range is 10. 9 was good enough until a couple of years ago so it's still perfectly good, may even find it a bit more robust and durable. Also less nickable if using it for Uni commuting.

Most stuff is prety easy to fit and you can download instructions from the manufacturers website (can with Campag so I doubt Shimano is any different). The only area that may require some more expertise is the cranks and bottom bracket, particularly if you take Rob's with the outboard bearings.

Adam,

If you are starting from scratch, suggest looking at the groupsets section of ebay. Additionally you should be able to pick up bars stem etc quite easily...The most difficult bit is getting a decent set of sti levers..

here's a start...

As for building, most of it is just putting the right bit in the right hole. That sounds familiar for some reason....

Ta,

Graham.

Adam I've got loads of time on my hands at the moment, a workshop with all the right tools and a few bits and pieces you maybe could use.

I don't mind giving you a hand/showing you how to do things to build up your bike.

ebay, its all about ebay.
if i were you I would as Graham says and buy the groupset off ebay. Although you can get good bargains for mechs and levers on their own e.g. Ultegra levers 9 speed for £30.
In fact you might as well buy everything off ebay, handelbars I have seen for pretty cheap as well.

Gd luck

George, i might take you up on that.

Sean, im not the only sprinter in the club, but I am the sprinter

Ebay and the wider online shop arena are being consulted as we speak.

Rob, I may well need a crankset, ill get back to you.

Graham, i think i can get the right bits in the right holes :? What im wondering about is getting the gears working right etc...?

Cheers for the advice guys!

must admit I'm not a campag snob or shimano wh**e as my bikes are mix and match, but never had anything from either company break, only thing I would say is for me campag looks nicer and if I get it 2nd hand I don't pay the extra bit for the image!
