Reliability rides

Postby Jon H » Thu Jan 08, 2004 8:49 pm

Is anybody thinking of doing any of the reliability rides in the next few weeks? I'm hoping to do some of them, dependant on weather of course. Details are on Londoncyclesport.com - it's just like a clubrun really, but you get to see some different places and meet folk from other clubs.

8.30 seems an early start for January. They must be hard in Horton Kirby. :D

Did anyone do the Catford reliability ride yesterday?
I rode out to the start, but once off the main roads the lanes around there were so icy I decided it was too risky. Riding up the lane to Halstead I felt my wheels slide a couple of times and saw one guy end up on his arse about 50 metres ahead of me. I had a cup of tea at the village hall and rode home again.

i think brett and dave k went on the catford RT, I was going to go, but when i saw the heavy frost in the morning decided it wasnt worth risking crashing on a circuit route i dont know.
went out later once it had thawed abit. I want to do a reliability trial but think im running out of dates and options because my track stuff clashes with the ones that are left.

what is a relaibility run?
The name seems confusing.
Is one supposed to be testing the reliability of oneself or one's bike?

I think it's supposed to be reliability of the rider. On some of them you opt for a time in which you'll complete the ride - say 50k in 2 hours, 2-1/2 hours or whatever, then you get a certificate if you complete it in the time you say.

On my performance so far I'm completely unreliable:
2003 - Started one ride and got so cold I rode home instead of round the course. Punctured on the way to the start of another ride, wrecking the tyre so turned round and went home.
2004 - Quit at the HQ and went home.
I see a pattern emerging here.

well, at least you are reliably unreliable.
I'm sure that's deserving of some sort of certificate?

mine a similar story of un-reliability

2002 i did sydenham ride, rode round with a load of old guys and stopped a couple of times to help people with punctures and it was lashing with rain most of the way, missed my time by 15 mins.
next one was old ports, was doing fine until i got lost and cried all the way up star hill when i missed my time by 10 minutes, blew so badly i couldnt even push my bike on foot at one point..all character building stuff

2003 i managed the old ports with time to spare, hurray, time spent training in derbyshire did the trick.
the sydenham i did with florence, it was her first reliability trial (not on tandem) and we missed the time by about half hour after a puncture and a slight detour/getting lost

2004 i couldnt be arsed to go out in the ice... non starter.

I see another trend here.
Do these things ever happen in nice weather?

Actually they sound like a laugh in that you don't have to be fast and you get new scenery.

I might be up for one as long as the start's not 100s miles from Tooting
