Go for it grimpeurs. 900 quid has got to be worth having a stab at.

I'll be in the IOW so can't disgrace myself this year but would strongly recommend it to others. A huge crowd cheers you up the climb no matter how slow you go, it's like nothing you're likely to get anywhere else.

The atmosphere at the top of the climbs for the Bec and Catford events is unlike anything you'll experience outside of the pro peloton. Of all the races I have done, only the Westminster Crit got anywhere near the same level of support from the crowd.

Given how short both the Catford and Bec climbs are, a lot of sprinters tend to do as well if not better than the climbers. In fact anyone with a big engine tends to do well on them. You need serious power to storm over the steeper parts of the climb. I certainly won't be threatening the leaders but will be having a go nonetheless.

Who know - three solid ACC places, a bit of luck and three members of the club could be £900 richer.

Message from Garry Beckett, Bec CC hillclimb promoter;

[quote]Hi All, this is a plea for help and passing the word please....

Well it seems like Postman Pat and his gang have thrown a serious spanner in the works of competing in & organising cycle races!!!
I personally have received no post of any description since Thursday 4th October, so even if you had posted entries for our event just prior to that, I would guess its almost a 100% Guarantee that your entry will not make it through to me in time.
Thats even if the posties decide that they've had enough of a long weekend break and go back to work on Monday!!!!
According to official sources the current backlog of mail will already take several weeks to clear, and much of it may never reach its intended destination....

Attached you will find a list of entries I have so far received either by post, or hand delivered. They are not in any seeded order & should not be taken as a start list. I know via telephone contact that I have at least 28 entries stuck in the post, and I would be guessing as too how many people are unaware that their entry has not been recieved and are oblivious to their plight.

If your name is not on the attached list and you have intention to enter the Bec C C Hill Climb, may I suggest two ways of getting your entry too me. One is unorthodox, and I hope the powers to be at CTT will see our predicament & not have a problem with it considering these exceptional circumstances. And I trust that no one will be offended or upset by this proposed method, and that common sense will prevail to allow ALL competitions, not just ours to continue in the best way we can....

Suggestion 1. Deliver it personally to: 5 Archer Road, South Norwood, London SE 25 4JN

or

2. Download an entry form from the CTT website, which can then be completed and emailed direct to me. A written signature could then be entered to your form during 'sign on' on the day of the event to keep everything legal by way of insurance's etc. And entry fees can be paid to me on the day (preferably cheques please).

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WOULD A RIDER TO BE ALLOWED COMPETE WITHOUT THESE TWO OBLIGATIONS BEING FULFILLED

And I will also not accept entries just on a phone call saying the entry is on its way (I've been caught with that one before!!!)

I will of course have to trust that all entries received in this way will fulfil their financial obligations even if they DNS. All club secretary's will be informed should any entrant fail to pay up as a result of DNS!!! Once your name is on a start list, it is considered an official entry.

Considering the problems caused by this postal strike, I think it only fair to all that I keep the closing date for entries open till the very latest possible time, and I will make 18.00hrs Saturday 13th October the absolute cut off without exception.

Finally, I would again ask you all to spread the word to colleagues & clubmates regarding this situation.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help & support

Regards

Garry Beckett,

On the list of entries received as of 07/10/07 there is only Tony & myself from ACC, and only one team so far with 3 riders. So, c'mon chaps, do you not fancy a share of a £900 team prize or what?

Stu phone or email Gary Beckett and let him know your entry is in the post. Explain you're a junior and can't hope to know about grown-up things like postal strikes  He's a good bloke and I'm sure will stick you on the startlist.

[quote]Hi All,
yep its that time of year again when I become the pestering B who keeps you informed of all the wonderous happenings at the Bec C C Annual Open Hill Climb!!!

The 2006 edition of the event was absolutely remarkable on several fronts. Firstly, for the very first time in the history of the event we had a dead heat for 1st place. Gary Dodd of Sigma Sport, and Bill Bell of the Gemini B.C. battled to the line, in atrocious weather to both record a time of 1.49.17
Neither of these 'Kings of the Hill' have, as yet, stuck their heads above the turret for this years event, and neither have they been spotted out reconoitering White Lane in prep for another crack at taking the honours. But theres still ample time for them to get their entries into the post, so watch this space!!! Having said that a couple of 'Names' have thrown their hats into the ring for 07, but more of that in (the much awaited) further news bulletins from Hill Climb HQ!!

Secondly, the very fact that the event was run at all was remarkable. The weather was possibly the worst the race had ever been held in since its 1956 inception, apart form when the Great storm of 1987 made the hill impassable by fallen trees. Yet despite such appalling conditions, still a record number of competitors battled their way up the hill against a torrent of rain that made it more akin to a swimming gala then a cycle race. Remarkable feats of riding, that have added stories of valiant ascents to the history pages, of what is fast becoming a 'cult event' amongst hill climbs.

And on a final front, the crowds!! To quote one of last years riders " this event has better crowds, and more atmosphere, than most Premier Calendar events" says it all.
The very fact that so many people came out to stand in the torrential rain, watch the riders, shout themselves hoarse, and create such an incredible and probably unique cycle event atmosphere was unbelievable. To all of you that were there, we at the Bec thank you & hope that you enjoyed yourself enough to come back for more this year. And if you weren't there, or have never been, than you dont know what your missing!!!!!

This year, it is my aim to have an even bigger, better, (and a lot b---dy drier) event, and we have again been granted a Full Road Closure by those very nice people at Tandridge District Council. And for that we are very very grateful.
For further details of this years event please see the attached, or drop me a line

Regards to all,
Garry Beckett, Event Organiser

Hopefully I'm now entered for both Catford and Bec hill climbs.

Maria and myself put our entries through Mr Beckett's letterbox yesterday, after all he only lives in South Norwood.

It's much easier than cycling to Eastbourne to hand in the entry for the Catford HC. Luckily, that organiser was at the cyclo-cross in East Grinsted yesterday so Maria was able to hand our entries to him personally.
