think that in the same way a thin film of water makes your tyres slip far more on a manhole cover or tramline, it also lubricates the bit of metal or glass as it works its way into the rubber.
when i went MTBing in the alps this year i didn't take any chances - thick downhill tyres plus superthick downhill tubes. Added about 2kg to my bike, but I didn't have to ride uphill.
Unfortunately on the first day I rode over a 4 inch nail...
