Bec CC Hill Climb

Oh Doctor.....

What an event! Great turn out from ACC, and some excellent times from da crew. I was robbed - I missed the lanterne rouge by a whole place!!

Anyhoo - how was it fer me. I was very nervous before the start, silly really as I'd had three goes yesterday but trust me, the atmosphere was completely different today. I'd hoped to go sub 4 minutes.

So - had a quick nerve steadying natter with Dan at the start. Called up and of course I had to be held up for the off (too steep to diy this one). That felt weird as I've done all this years events with me acting as pusher  .

So - off I go into the eerie silence. The first bit doesn't feel too bad  honest and I was in small ring @ front, 4th biggest @ back. After about 200 yds I got out of the saddle, starting to struggle a bit. Encouragment from a few folk who'd come down the hill to get a better view.

300 yards, into 3rd biggest cog, not feeling good at all, seriously, didn't like it one teeny tiny bit. Getting a bit louder

450 yards, head spinning, legs hurting, into 2nd biggest cog wishing it would end. Aware that the noise is building up

500 yards, very briefly into granny gear, all over the shop, heart's knocking out the rhythm from Complete Control on speed. It's very loud, I feel very terrible, can't make out anybody/anything.

600 yards, just buried myself, not going to fail now, legs are burning, noise is overwhelming, can't get any air, where's the f***ing finish!!

700 yards - it's all over, I JUST skimmed the pot hole before the finish, I honestly didn't see it until it was about 2cm away. I was cooked, gasping for air, what a mess. Adam gave me a drink and I had to have a kneel down, big time wobblies going on. Mrs Snoop commented on the nice shade of grey I'd gone.

I made 3.24.85 which stunned me, way better than I expected. Massive thanks to everyone for the huge cheerage, that really drove me on through the hardest ride I've ever done. The hill climb was great and it was vile all at the same time.

Don't know all the times, which someone can post here later, but a great event as usual.

Managed to get Paul and I back from the IoW in time to go straight to it to support the many ACC riders.

Highlights:
New hill record - 1:43  :!:

Snoop - spoke to a nervous Cap'n before the start who said he'd be happy to beat 4 minutes. 3:24 - a great ride, looked good charging up the hill.

Rob - riding his beautiful bright yellow fixie. Looked smooth unlike a lot of the fixed riders who'd over geared a lot.

Dan - Looked to be going well when he hit the ACC support crew. Said afterwards that he was as he'd just found 10 new gears, forgot to take it out the big ring after warming up and rode the first half in a huge gear, doh!

Tony was fastest agreeable with a 2:11 I think.

Well done guy's that was a good fun day, some of the Addiscombe comments from the commentators were classic "THE RIDERS HAVE USUALLY GIVEN EVERYTHING AS THEY CROSS THE FINISH LINE, LOOKS LIKE THIS ADDISCOMBE RIDER HAS GIVEN EVERYTHING STILL WITH 2 YARDS TO GO"
No names

A great afternoons entertainment!

A huge addiscombe posse lurking all the way up the hill, faces include-

Andrew G, Paul D, Kasper,Marco,Jim, Tel,Mark Mc, Me, Joanna,Robert,

Chris watts, Roy G+ Mrs G, Graham O + Littl'un, Mrs Snoop+Kiera,

George,Adam- boy model,

Chris+lisa, Tamar doing the coffees. I hope i have remembered everyone.

Thats just the spectators! Quite a few riders as well( the fools)
I just hope it was a barrage of noise for you.
It doesn't matter where you come, I admire you for having the cajonnes(sp) to do it.
Rob T looked uber cool on his acc coloured fixie, really composed.

I could see George was just itching to have a go.

When the Cap'n came into view around the hairpin astride the black pearl the noise was deafening, he was giving it everything, a face masked in pain, grey hair shimmering in the late october sun, a waft of salty air as he sailed by ( cont p.94). AWESOME.

Big Dan impressed as well, his concession for aerobic excellence was to give up the capstan full strength (untipped) and now ride only on silk cut!
A wise choice.

Jon H did us proud as usual- even tho he was suffering a bit of a cold.

Tony Kelly was going well, Rob C hauled his ass up there as well.

The winner OMFG- 1.43, some scrawy assed guy. His tongue was lolling out of his mouth, sort of thing you would have seen at a kiss concert two decades ago.

sean- come and have a go, the crowd love it when they see you suffer, but they will give you all the support they can muster.

All in all a beautiful day for it, last year it was foggy and lashing it down, cold and slippery.

Chapeau BEC for the organization. Brilliant.

Well done guys, I was a bit annoyed not to get a go. Especially when I heard that someone had been allowed to take Sylv's place when we were told I couldn't take his place mid week. But I guess thats time-trialling for you, antiquated.

Doug, you did well! At least you didn't get caught by (Pro) Tony Gibb.

I don't think he knew who I was at the finish for the first few seconds, the red mist had well and truly descended!

Adam (boy model - apparently :P )

What's with the elevated handlebars/levers? Is that a boy model thing?

Was absolutely s***ing myself before this. Not sure why, I'd entered late after being on the forum after a few beers. I looked at the start list and everyone around me seemed to be part of a team.

Was worried about which gear to start of with as I didn't really want to be changing gear halfway through. Started out spinning really fast and soon out of breath. Felt awful before I got to the first signs of a crowd. Once I was in the crowd it was absolutely mental.

Everyone seemed to be screaming my name in my face at point blank range, remember a bloke in a full royal blue skin suit and a KOM hat running alongside me for a bit. Could hear Marco's voice. It felt like I had my full weight over the front of the handlebars and I was really grinding as I was going past the Addiscombe contingent. I looked up and could see the finish and I think I head someone say that you're near the finish.

I remember the MC saying something about looking spent and that just about summed up how I had been feeling from about half a mile previously.

Anyway, it was a fantastic event, thanks to all Addiscombe for the encouragement. Particuarly thanks to Marco, you looked a bit concerned about me once we started chatting.

BTW, I haven't stopped coughing since I left.

10/10 for a great day, highly recommended.

I made sure I briefed the people I was with (some MTBing mates and couple of CW/MBR staff) what names of ACC riders were.

The guy in the blue was a Paragon rider, he was only chasing his teammates up the hill so I told him to chase you too!!

Levers, just a personal thing. I find them better like that for getting a good firm and low position without being on the drops...

Height of the bars, well ive been thinking about this for a while. On my new Giant the bars will be lower becasue the head tube is shorter. So, if all that works well, ill lower the Trek's bars too. Having said that, here's a pic of the current set up and it looks ok I think:
