So who is Dan Fleeman and what is Blue Sky Cycles? winner of the Becs (setting a new record) and Catford hill climbs on his first attempt.

Ah!

Welcome to the Dan Fleeman website. After having spent the last two seasons racing in France, I am now riding for the brand new DFL-Cyclingnews-Litespeed pro-continental team. The Belgium racing calendar will make up a large part of my racing this season but also races all over europe and the world. You can follow my progress through links on the site, such as my race diary, which will give you a first hand account of the sharp-end of life in the peleton. I look forward to receivng your comments

All a bit out of order really and not in the spirit of the events.

Dan Fleeman and Dave Clarke are both from DFL I think. Never heard of Blue Sky Cycles but they bought in a couple of ringers to scoop the big prize money for the team competition. Dave Clarke rode for another "club" the previous day in the Brighton hill climbs. DFL aren't registered as a CTT club so they can't ride for them and would have to join as individual members.

Don't agree with it as it isn't in the right spirit and potentially robs other clubs of potentially valued funds. If this is going to happen though, Huw, any chance you can use your CW contacts to have a few useful riders wear yellow for the day?

There have been a few comments on the London Cycle Sport forum too, to which I have added my views.

It's one of the problems with having multiple governing bodies in the sport. If teams are selective with which body they register with, then riders can ride for one team in CTT events and their regular road team in BC/UCI events. I believe Blue Sky are compliant with the rules - but, as others have said, I'm not convinced their approach was completely in the spirit of the event.

BTW - I wasn't aware that Dave Clarke rode the Brighton Mitre events. I haven't seen the results sheet. If he did ride for a different team in those events, then he has been a naughty boy!

I disagree, didn't a certain Chris Boardman win these events a while back??

And what difference does it make if they 'get round' the CTT, if they weren't so bloody antiquated anyway perhaps they might be a little more accomodating. If I could speak french properly with the right accent I would have been Sylvain for the day on Sunday, but no, they won't swap entries, and still had the cheek to ask for Sylvs entry fee anyway.

The CTT needs to wise up, modernise, and get on with BC. Imagine how much more seriously TTing would be contested if you gained BC ranking points from riding them...

I don't think anyone is complaining about individuals be they pros or big names such Wiggings riding these events. I'm certainly not anyway - I like riding against the top riders and finding out how slow I really am. Plus they help draw the crowds and generate interest. The issue is around the team prize. I've attached my post from LCS (slightly edited) below:

[quote]The current rules in this area are definitely a little odd....

A rider who is a first-claim member of a club/road team which is affiliated to the CTT must represent that club/road team in CTT events. However, if a rider's first-claim team choses not to affiliate to the CTT, that rider has the flexibility to join whatever CTT-affiliated team they like. Surely that gives them more flexibility than in the first case? Plus CTT lose out on registration fees, etc.

Maybe the answer should be that if a rider's first-claim team choses not to affiliate, then that rider has to join another CTT-affiliated team (as currently) but he/she is ineligible for any team prize in any CTT event. Effectively, the rider's first-claim team has snubbed the CTT, so, in return, CTT doesn't allow first-claim members of that team to win team prizes in their events. Rules for individual prizes are unchanged.

That seems fair to me. It would also stop the 'marriages of convenience' that have happened in the past to win team prizes / national medals and have allegedly happened here too.

I don't believe it would that hard to enforce - as for the vast majority of competitors, their first claim British Cycling teams and CTT teams are the same.

So it all comes down to money, isnt that why the Pro's take drugs?

Its a sad situation if people are going to complain over the winning team just becasue it was somewhat composite. The fact is they were the best riders, no?

1. Dave Clarke did NOT ride the Brighton Mitre hillclimbs.

2. There's a slight complication where Pro riders are concerned. If their team is not registered with CTT they can still ride CTT events if their team is registered as a UCI team and they hold a UCI race licence. For example David Millar (Saunier Duval) and Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis) riding in CTT events. I think DFL are probably registered as a Pro-Continental team, so DFL members could have ridden for DFL and did not have to join a CTT registered team.

3. If I was a member of the 2nd team, and had ridden for that team all year I would be rather upset about a "team for the day" taking £300 prize money off me.

Without laws, we have anarchy, without rules we have no racing.

I don't have a problem if they abided by the rules, however unfair/antiquated they may be - (If you don't like it, get them changed, that's what AGM's are for - but I never see people that whinge about rules actually attending), but if they broke the rules, then something should be done.

I think there's a real fuss being made here because they won, and because people have not heard of Blue Sky Cycles (Btw they are an American bike company with a branch in Enfield).

If you look at the times of the counting members towards the winning team across both Catford and Bec Hill Climbs it's only Daniel Fleeman whose results are something special. The other 2 riders' times were as fast as any of the other local contenders. In fact the 3rd placed rider was outside of the top 20 in one of the races !

Obviously, they would've wanted to give it their best shot like any other team, but if they were really just setting out to win £900 people of that calibre and racing in those echelons would've grouped together faster hill climbers than the ones they had !

In riding for Blue Sky Cycles for the hill climbs they haven't broken any rules, as that is their first claim CTT team.

As an aside, hill climb races are an anomale as they are run under time trialling rules, but the people that are likely to do well at the events are road racers and cyclo cross riders - if these are the only CTT events they're going to do in the year is it really a priority for a road racer or a road racing team to affiliate to CTT ?
Maybe hill climbs should be run under BC rules !

As for them going against the spirit of competition I don't agree. In fact, I think they added to the spirit of the competition by adding flare and dynamism - wish I'd been there to see it ! If all they wanted was the money they wouldn't have done any other racing that weekend apart from the Bec hill climb, and they would've "vetted" to find the fastest hill climbers.

Many people ride for different teams across different disciplines. eg Matt Seaton races as Rapha Condor in the road racing, and Mosquito in the cyclo cross. Some women road racers race for their club individually (eg Twickenham), and for a team (eg Planet X) in the team series. It's all above board. Others do it in cyclo cross, mountain biking races, and cyclosportives.

These are the words of Craig Simpson from Blue Sky Cycles (taken from LCS forum).
".......there is and was no sponsorship involved.........
We are a group of friends that tied up a visit, a curry and a few beers with a couple of races just like in the old days before all the money involved started to ruin cycling. If the £900 was so important then we wouldn't have ridden the Catford in the morning.
It was just a few mates having a good days racing riding all above board for the same team so why would Dan and Dave want to spend £20 each joining HQ? As i said earlier, i would think that we will have the same team for next years events too. Why has that annoyed you so much?"

If we want to improve the spirit of cycling we should be congratulating and encouraging the young riders rather than viewing them with some kind of mistrust !

Maybe the CTT website has not been updated, but they do not show up as being registered with CTT.

If that is the case, then they should be DQ'd - not sour grapes as it doesn't affect me at all, just that the rules are there for everyone.
