"The seventies was the decade to be born in as everyone knows."

Not so - being born in the seventies means you were too young to appreciate them

Being born in the 60s meant I got to see England win the world cup, the first moon landing, the end of psychadelia and prog, the golden age of rock, heavy metal, glam, disco and punk.

Consequenty in the '70s I got to see gigs by Yes, Genesis (pre-Phil Collins mercifully) AC/DC, Rush, Deep Purpple, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Sweet, Motorhead, The Who, The Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Ramones, Talking Heads, Iggy and the Stooges, The New York Dolls, The Clash, Television, Pattie Smith, The Pistols, U2 and Joy Divison in their pomp (ie before the 80s had really started and long before embarassing reunion tours)

I pity any music lover born in the 90s who grew up on a staple diet of boy bands, Girl bands, manufacured TV-Reality show bands and watered-down, second time around brit-pop.

Carl: "Was that back in the 80's?, the days when a certain substance was doing the round" Na, that was actually in the early '90s, I think mainling heroin had become the trend by then :-)

Kasper "Doesn't that randomiser go on what other people are listening to so kinda cheating don't cha think." No - I-tunes shuffle simply pics random tunes from your own personal music library.

Which brings me on to...

HOW BIG IS YOUR ITUNES LIBRARY?

Currently trying to get my entire cd collection loaded up, I'm just over one third of way through and it is currently 6589 songs - 19days, 3hours, 42minutes and 27seconds running time and 29.90GB of info

And that's before all the Weather Report albums which could double that :-)

Hmmm, looks like I'm facing an 160G ipod investment

I keep having to delete stuff in mine as the 40Gb will only hold 6000-odd songs - I used the highest quality setting. Must be at around 500 cds plus I guess 1000-odd downloaded tracks. I might give my 40Gb Ipod to my sister to replace her defective 20Gb, and get a 80Gb for xmas.

The annoying thing is I think at the time I first uploaded the Cds in Itunes, I used the quickest import setting, which is why I think lots of tracks have those "shhh shhh" noises akin to a skipping Cd (maybe the Cd surface wasn't perfectly clean). But can't be faced with re-importing them all over again.

I also use the randomiser for my commuting, which is mostly when I use the Ipod.

I can't put a list of what it played this morning but Instant Street by dEus, Love is stronger than death by The The (coincidence!) and a TV on the radio track were pleasant surprises :)

Thanks for the advice Sylv. I can't believe how much the prices have come down. Applestore is now doing a 160G for £230

Not so long ago 40G ones used to cost £400!!!

Amazing what a bit of market competition will do

Didn't even know a 160Gb existed!

It's the same for digital cameras for instance - if you don't look at prices for a year or so you'll be astounded at what you can get for your money nowadays.

get a stand-alone hard drive - memory is cheap these days.

I use one to back up my music files anyway as I don't wan't everyting solely in one location in case of theft/breakdown etc

desperately trying to get all my cd's on there in case I get burgled - I can replace the cat my bikes and pianos but my 1978 copy of War Dance by Colloseum II - That's un-insurable :-)

At least, she didn't melt them in a big saucepan, or thrown them at you from the second floor window while you were down on the street, snapping them as they reached the ground. Now which film is it I saw that in - high fidelity?

I'm guessing from Sean's new handle that his selection for inclusion on this CD will be 'Jean Genie'
