Cyclo Cross Race Sun 28 Oct Season of Mist and Mellow

Postby Kasper » Mon Oct 29, 2007 2:25 pm

Thankyou Acc for such a well organised event and one it was a pleasure to marshall at.

Right now thats out the way, onto the riders, well done Maria for being the sole Acc er to finish!!!! :)

Well done also to Marco for giving it a really good try and (almost) completing the race.

Unlucky Aodan better luck next time. You will be at Herne Hill wont you?

Spectacular course made all the better by the weather!
Somewhere I'd definatelty want to return before next year.

Long way to travel on a scooter so I thought I'd make an evening of it and stopped off at The Wheatsheaf in Bough Beeches.
Lovely pub and lovely grub, just a shame there weren't more Accer's to keep me company.
Anyway I took up position in front of the roaring fireplace dated 1607 and proceeded to slowly hang my now wet waterproofs up to dry.
Started off with an Irish coffe to warm me up which I'm sure both Aodan and Connor would also have appreciated had they been there. :P
Now dry I ordered my 100% Angus Beef Burger and fries. Followed by a crafty pint of Kroenenburg 1664. Only 60 years older than the pub!!! :)

Finally thanks to Aodan and Maria for waitng for me at the end of the event and showing me the quick way home back to Croydon. Next time we're down there we'll all have to go to The Wheatsheaf.

Ps The owner was saying to us that it's possible to have a downhill event as well as the cyclo cross on at the same time, such is the size of the club grounds. V picturesque nestled in that Autumnal Kentish Valley. Ode to Autumn or what?
Season of Mist and Mellow fruitfulness,

BTW Alex, that last photo of yours is going to be turned into a Mountain bike shop would you believe? Cool or what?

Unfortunately, the weather and the conditions we were working in with no walls and no light and a canvass covering that leaked like a sieve, transpired into making the judging nie on impossible.

I burned the midnight oil and at around 2am was satisfied that I had done the best I could, but with so many gaps in the numbers where they were so muddy, Andrew and Peter couldn't read them, there will be some movement before the final result.

My own humble marshalling spot once the start was out of the way.
I saw a lot less fallers than you Tamar!! V dramatic!!!
A good spot to watch non the less; could see right across the valley and all the riders as they slowly wound their way up the hill.
Well done also to Marco for giving it a really good try and (almost) completing the race.

Marco pulled the CX classic of checking his watch when he was nearing the end of a lap, realising time was up and we were just waiting for the leader to start waving the checkered flag, and pulling up and waiting just before the finish.

Knowing that everyone finishes next time they cross the line after the leader Marco was none to keen to do another lap, no matter how much I tried to coax him. He waited for the leader and then followed him over the line thus making sure he didn't have to spend another 10 minutes slithering around in the mud without any brakes. :D

Kasper - you have the photo location as an image (i.e. an url ending .jpg) and put after it.

That was a canny bit of riding Marco. You must have waited for the leader to come behind you and then just crossed over after he'd completed.

Apologies if you completed normally I had no way of knowing when the race was finishing other than time and I just remember seeing you while there were lots of riders still on the course.

Blimey Paul! 2am sorting the results - definitely over and above the call of duty. It must have been dreadful working in those conditions. Well done!

Curiously, Marco's number is absent from the final lap finish sheets, so could yet be placed higher.....

This cyclo-cross lark actually looks like fun.

Oh Paul btw.

Spinning = Cramp (experienced after my bike was brutally sabotaged)

I shall explain later why (if you want to know)

Thank you very much indeed for organising such an excellent race - a good deal more intresting than many.

However, could I put in a small request for you to revist the results before they go final? I rode as number 58 and appear to have been missed from the results entirely (again). Finished in front of a guy in red whose club I can't remember, James Wilson (Rapha), and Craig Stevens (PCA), and behind a Sydenham rider. Both of the latter seem also to have been missed.

Was lapped by the winner right on the start / finish line on the hour but by no other riders.

However, thanks again for an excellent event. really enjoyed it. In an odd sort of way!

Hi Paul,

Thanks for tabulating the results. Sounds like it must've been a nightmare. Looking down the list it seems that a couple of girls are missing - Katharine Mason (Sussex Nomads) and Julene (Dulwich Paragon). Sorry I don't know her last name.

The finishing order we had for the women when we discussed it among ourselves was : Nicky Hughes (Activ Cycles), Katharine Mason (Sussex Nomads), Sarah Sutton (San Fairy Ann), Imogen Cain (junior) (Palmer Park), myself, Abi Armstrong (London Phoenix), Julene (Dulwich Paragon), Kimberley Kabatoff (London Dynamo).

Katharine would've finished about 6 or 7 places behind Nicky. Then Abi, Julene and Kimberley would've been consecutively placed.

Hope it helps.

Maria
When I took my number off I couldnt see the number on it at all so I really dont know how the lap scorers managed to do such a good job and get any numbers whatsoever!!

Exactly, and then the sheets were wet as well......I've made a few amendments and am almost there!!
Tamar wrote "I was marshalling on a tip-top corner and saw about 20 crashes."

That corner was well sketchy - especially as you'd picked up alot of speed from the descent and suddenly had to slow down to do an off camber right hand turn onto the single track. I miraculously managed to stay upright, but I did have to dig myself out of the bracken a few times, and there was a log that I had a close brush with a few times too :D

You definitely had the most entertaining spot, Tamar !
