Cost of replacing a bottom bracket

Postby supermatt » Mon Oct 29, 2007 2:40 pm

So, my bottom bracket on my roadie is worn and needs replacing. I called Evans and they said that the cost of replacing a BB is £35 plus the cost of the part.

Is that reasonable? What should I expect to pay?

It seems a little expensive to me.

Matt, If you can bring the bike and a replacement bottom bracket (and so long as it's not one of the external bearing types) to Bromley, then the replacement cost is a (big) bar of chocolate or a couple of beers.

Either way, the job should take about 10 - 15 minutes, so £35 plus parts does seem a little steep to me.

Matt I'll do it for a small chocolate bar or 1 beer if you're near Croydon.

Evans will rip you off for this. Their servicing costs are big and they seem to have slighlty iffy ability. In the Alps a bloke joined us at KoM having just had his bike serviced expensively at Evans a week before. It needed a new cable before he could ride it as they'd frayed it and ballsed up the fitting so the gears wouldn't index properly.

With the right tools you can do it yourself, but if you buy the bracket from the shop then the fitting cost is normally negligable.

Cost of BB varies. Campag square taper are cheap up to Chorus which costs a bit more and Record is expensive. Both those are carbon shelled though. Don't know about Shimano costs or how their external cups system fits.

Depends where he lives Grahame - spoilt for choice.

I guess Evans have to cover cost of tools, staff, overheads etc so maybe not that extortionate, perhaps we should get a business going :?:

I have the tools for external BBs if needed, just replaced my bearings this weekend (did no-one notice my bike wasn't creaking anymore at Hillingdon?).

Fitting is fool-proof wth those.

Thanks for all the replies and offers for assistance. I live in Shepherds Bush in west London, but might have to take a ride down to Croydon or so at the weekend.

I guess I should investigate my BB to see what replacement I need to buy too. And it might also be work looking into getting my own tools :?

Marco, the poor lad is still throwing his toys out the pram for Paul insisting on Mo having his gears restricted for the ACC race.

He was whining all the way home to me that he only got dropped because he couldn't spin his legs fast enough, but assured me that he would have been ok had his gears been 'un-restricted'.

Yeah right Mo

Actually, Paul is quite gd. He managed to tell me how to put my gears back to default without confusing me. And they work fine now

Are you playing on the guilt factor Paul? :?
