"There was too much going on in October and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it - Alps, Isle of Wight, Hillingdon, but now I'm taking some time off"

WHAT! I was relying on you for the annual 21mph average to Brighton on the vintage car run this sunday

That's a joke - I can't make it this year :-(

Chaps - and Michelle

Just to clear up the one hour ride before the ride idea.

Lots of people wanted to do longer rides this winter but didn't want to be out all day (mainly Chelsea supporters and people with familys) - so riding for an hour BEFORE getting to Charlwood (along with the extra bits in the middle and end) means that if you start at 8, you've ridden for 5 hours and STILL get back the time you normally would at around 1pm.

Obviously you don't have to do the extra hour (or you can add it on at the end or whatever) and some people are pretty close to an hours ride just to get to CSS anyway

It's great that everyone is so keen to start some steady winter miles. But from a training perspective, I really don't believe there's a need to ramp-up the mileage quite so early (unless you have some key goals very early next season). I'm sure none of the top RRers in the country will be doing as such this weekend. 'Less is more' is a motto that I like when it comes to training - especially at this time of the year.

Of couse, if people want to make use of the unseasonably warm weather and fancy getting some decent rides in, then that's different. Simply don't expect too much return on the time invested riding this weekend when competing next season.

I don’t get the opportunity to ride during the week now it’s dark so early, so an extended ride on Saturdays suits me fine – maintain some good base miles during the winter for the early reliability rides.

I’m def up for this.

Whats the fatality rate for this one Sylv?

Two died two years ago (one on the bus to the start).

But that's nothing

Workmate is also doing the Yukon trail challenge - week-long self supported trek with temperatures below - 40

I should be up for this. Have hardly touched the bike since the Pyrenees in Sept and it's showing.

"means that if you start at 8, you've ridden for 5 hours"...one of the downsides of doing the clubrun I find is getting home having been out for 6 hours but only c.4 hours riding time....I need to be more time efficient with my cycling.

Huw, will this be at 'audax' pace?

(BTW-got the cheque. Thanks)

That's rich coming from you :)

The man that set the Isle of Wight on fire at 25mph uphill out of the car park then after 20 minutes of torture turned round and said " Steady - I think we're dropping people"

Dropping people? There were people still in Freshwater when you were going up the zig zags in Shanklin
