WANTED: Training Wheels, borrow or buy

Postby MJ_1993 » Mon Nov 05, 2007 6:36 pm

I have been informed that the mavic ksyriums arent very water tolerable. And since my dad is using my old bike, I need a pair of training wheels. GB cycles are attempting to use cheap campag wheels on my shimano bike, claiming it will work fine. But if anyone has a pair of 10 or 9 speed wheels I can borrow for the winter then please tell me. The thing is I have just bought a Garmin Edge 305. So I dont have a stack load of cash

Mo, Campag Vento wheels are only about £100 and are fantastic for training/winter. They'll last a fair while (2 to 3 years under your weight easily) and are practically bombproof.

They'll work fine on your bike it is only the freehub body that needs to be shimano to take the correct cassette.

Top of my head, don't know. I'm sure some people in the club run shimano and have zondas though so no reason they don't offer Shimano freehubs on all the wheels. Failing that Fulcrum 7s get a good review and are also about £100 I think.

Mo I have a set of silver CXP22 rims with black straight pull spokes taken off my 2008 model Specialized Tarmac elite. You can see the wheels on this link. http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp? ... gn=froogle

They have been used for 4 miles. The rear hub is Shimano. They are gathering dust would sell them for £50 ono.

I don't know mo...One of my rear wheels is a Mavix CXP33 and that has been used over many winters with no issues.

Hi Mo - For sure, you don't want to use a decent set of wheels regularly on clubruns and general training ride over winter unless you are made of money.

On dirty roads / in the rain etc. all parts of the wheel take an absolute battering. Rims wear really quickly when dirty, water and grime penetrates the bearings, rims are also more prone to getting buckled in puddles that conceal pot-holes, etc. (brake pads can also get worn amazingly quickly - sometimes barely lasting more than one hilly ride).

Usual practice over winter is to use a tough, durable set of wheels at the cheaper end of the spectrum. Quality of the hubs and level of water resistance varies significantly from manufacturer to manufacturer and within the ranges offered by manufacturers. My experience is that cheap Campag hubs (e.g. as were on my 2004 Scirocco wheelset) are not really water resistant at all. Mid-range Mavic hubs seem to be better. However, better to talk to The Guru or experienced bike shop staff - e.g. Guy or Pete Wise at Butlers. Which I think gets us back to your original question.....what is a good winter wheelset?

Mo, you are worrying too much about things  If your dad is riding your old bike then get him to buy you some winter wheels, or get it back, simple
Buy some Fulcrum 7's or 5's (£100 - £140) ride them in to the ground for 2 or 3 years, throw them away and then get your dad to buy you some more :D

Anyway stop worrying and just ride your bike and keep it clean
