Imperial Winter Series 2007/2008 - Hillingdon

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

The Come Back !

Postby ajay khandelwal » Tue Nov 06, 2007 9:34 pm

Had good fun at hillingdon in the B race (nice sprint Graham !) , and was amazed to watch the heroic breaks in the A race ! Credit to Stu for getting away in that wind, and to Keith for leading him out. I've watched a few races at Hillingdon, and its rare for 2 riders to stay away like that with five laps to go ! I couldn't believe they managed to do it !

The club race certainly cleared my lungs out, and I had to go and lie down when I got home ! This Saturday I did the club run, and on the home run, I got my heart rate upto 189, a season's best ! Frankly, I've hardly been on my bike this year. My weight has gone up from 72kg three years ago, when I was racing at Hillingdon, and is now 77kg. My bike must be a good 500 gms lighter - but I still make that 4.5 kg disadvantage. My weekly miles, including the odd club run, have gone down to an optimistic 20 miles, vs 100 - 200 when I was racing.

My racing stories of 'what could have been' have fallen from the hundreds to just really keeping quite when it gets dished out. Huw told me he had planned to put me in my own race at Hillingdon, a 'C' race, and you know I really couldn't argue with that ! In fact, I was kinda hoping thats what he would do !

But after seeing how Uncle Keith brought back some magic to Hillingdon, I decided its time for a come back. Yes, another one  I bought a half price race licence yesterday, and I plan to target a couple of Saturdays to achieve a long standing goal of getting myself a 3rd cat licence before the club dinner !

Come on, someones got to keep the dying art of wheel sucking alive !
So Ill be shedding a few pounds, getting in some training, and see you fellow ACCers out there on the first Sat in December.

Good news to hear to Marek and Toks are joining us for next year...I think there's space for them in the ACC just for fun group guys, what do you think :?:

[quote="A (JC) Pettachi"]Hmmmm, im just thinking about getting some in early.

I have been told that riding with E/1s is much less difficult in Dec/Jan as they are a lot lower in form than the rest of the year. Anyone have any experience of this?

That's no given - I did a few of these a couple of years ago and you could never tell - one week it was like a fast training ride with everyone staying together before racing it out on the last two to three laps - the next week Gary Dodd and Paul Pickup turned up, attacked on lap three, and there were about 50 riders going round in groups of 2 or 3

Those winter series races were always enjoyable last year, despite the apparent dulness of the circuit. Especially on crisp cold clear days. Planning to do some.

Hmm, should I compromise my principles and have a go?

Would an old knacker like me still be able to cope with a "proper" 3/4 cat race?

Could I cope with being in the same field as another notorious wheel sucker?

Yes you should be fine Grahame.

The field can be 70-strong of which maybe 75% are wheel-suckers!

Can you bring yourself to join British Cycling after the Eastway fiasco?
And continuing Newts fiasco at Hog Hill hilarity?

Course you can. I think I will be as well as seems there's gonna be a big posse of ACC riders there this winter.

All i need is my own transport over there and back. I can't always be as lucky with a lift every weekend, CAN I???

President Joyce has sent through my BCF licence ... so no turning back ... come on Kasper and Graham... lets do it ... 18 days to go till the 1st race... I'm going to write up my daily training here. Today, half a bottle of red wine to deal with the shock of reality encroaching on my fantasy life  So instead of actual training I'm going to do a 5 minute visualisation exercise that involves Kasper and Graham giving me a good lead out until the last bend, where I unleash my 'peaking in winter' sprint at around 400 watts... and raise my hands in the air to take first place ... now where was I, ah yes, the rest of that wine... 8).

Yeah I see those more of a way to avoid getting rusty during the winter months and the big "shock to the system" that are the first few races in the new season, also because I'm too lazy to get on a turbo or do some solo training miles, but somehow I'll always enjoy a good hard race, even moreso if I've ridden to and back from it.

Well actually last year I was after early 3nd cat points but not so this year, which mean I might allow myself to try and join some suicide breaks instead of waiting for the final sprint :D
